Have I uncovered the truth?.....
Hi all,
Some of you may recall my Jane Inglis/McLaughlin/Cotterill saga. This was my gg grandmother b about 1842, maybe in Woodside Glasgow (she could well have lied about that ) and who most definetly lied about her parentage on her 1870 marriage registration to John Cotterill. She said her parents were Michael McLaughlin and Jane Queen. She also said she was a widow but I have no proof of that either, although on her death registration it mentions a first marriage to a Kane, no first name (a son was the informant). I can't find that marriage.
It seems clear to me that Jane had an illegitimate son William born 1864 as he is on the 1871 census with her and new husband John, as William Cotterill, son. I have found what I think is his birth registration, illigitimate to Jane Inglis. He disappears...I can't find him after this census.
I get the name Inglis because on EVERY ONE of her seven childrens' birth registrations she gives that as her maiden name.
Today I found a death certificate of who I think could be Jane's mother who died in Argyllshire. It states she was married to Michael Inglis, her father was (unclear -James?) McLaughlin and mother was Sarah Quin. Jane Cotterill did name one of her own daughters Sarah, and the name has been carried down in the family.
Is this just pure coincidence do you think...wishful thinking on my part, or do you, like me think the pieces add up?

You could well be correct about this. Have you been able to find William's death cert - does it contain any extra info?

Hi Liz,
I have not been able to find William's death. It is a difficult one as he could have been listed under Inglis, McLaughlin or Kane, from what I can determine. I have a poorhouse record submitted by John Cotterill in 1887 but there is no mention of William either.
Also there is lingering doubt about that birth registration, because the mother Jane signed her own name, whereas Jane Cotterill always signed with an x until 1904 where I have ONE copy of her signature and the writing of Jane looks very different (even allowing for the passing years). Maybe I should post the signatures in the gallery for others' opinions.
What makes tracing Jane even more difficult is that she was a Roman Catholic, so even if she stated the correct parents 'somewhere' the records of her birth are not readily available anyway!
Her husband John Cotterill is also hard to trace, as he was supposedly born in Oldham Lancashire England, and I can find no record of his birth either! I am almost ready to give them up, but I am so consumed by this mystery!

This seems like a really tough challenge, but don't give up totally. Someone may come up with an idea ....

Thanks Liz,
I am trying to think laterally...maybe she married the Kane person outside Scotland? I looked at FreeBMD and nothing came up, but it is a longshot anyway.

Hi Nina,
Sorry Nina - i did my search from 1858 to 1870 (16+) just to be on the safe side and i cannot find a marriage for Inglis/Kane - no matter how i spell either.
I also couldnt find John Cotterill's birth - but then again im shattered and I have a 5am start in the morning.
I was thinking that if Janes father was a McLaughlin maybe she married a Kane using that name - i will check that out tomorrow.
John Cotterill - I couldnt find one with a oldham birth but then again Mrs Stupid here started the search at 1842 - i will look at a few yrs earlier tomorrow night, hopefully i might get lucky.

Thanks for looking Wee Ina,
I have asked folk to look for John Cotterill before with no success but you can never tell what a new pair of eyes may uncover, so I do appreciate you looking! I haven't had anyone looking for the Kane/Inglis?McLaughlin marriage yet, until you.
I have put a lid on this branch of my tree so many times...I just wish I could get a break with them! So every few months I try again...
Thanks again,
Nina
