Post by angel » Sun Apr 16, 2006 4:43 pm

Hello everyone

I am looking for informatiom on George Menzies born about 1809 Moffat and married Jessie (surname unknown) about 1842 Newtown.

They lived in Midlothian and may have married there. Can anyone help please?

Have you looked at the marriage of George Menzies and Janet Gill on the IGI although it was in 1835?
Banns were called in Moffat and Peebles.

I think this is them in Edinburgh in 1841

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MENZIES George M 30 Hackney Coach Man Outside Census County (1841)
MENZIES Jannet F 27 Midlothian
MENZIES Alison F 6 Midlothian

Hello Annette

Thanks for your help but I am not sure this is my George Menzies as I have been surfing and found an Edinburgh sample of the 1851 census and found a George Menzies who was also a coachman and the right age.

I had thought I was looking for a John Menzies but the marriage cert says that the father was George. In the census that I found they had a son of the right name and I think the right age although his birth is not on SP or at Edinburgh. Most likely it was never registered.

Sometimes ages and names are clear, but other times not.

The 1851 census has a George, coachman, 43, b Moffat, plus wife Jessie, and sons Peter and William.

In 1861 George is 49, a widower, cabman, b. Moffat, along with only Peter, as lodgers in another household.

Jessie probably died after 1855, but in that period the spouse's name wasn't given, but the occupation was, and the record that I've looked at shows the deceased Janet as "wife of a Cab Driver" and the informant was "George Menzies, Husband"........... If it's the same person, and I think that there's a very high chance that it is, then her age at death is exactly the same as for the 1851 census, some years previously. Her maiden name is shown as GILL.

Young Peter's death record is straightforward to locate, - there aren't that many of that name and age, - and his age matches, his father's name matches, his father's occupation nearly matches, - carter, - his mother was reported as Janet, but his mother's maiden name is shown as GUILD.

George's death register entry?, - probably that of the 66 year in Craiglockart Poor House, shown as "Widower of _______", no occupation, and no info on parents; the informant being a Poor House official ........
There is, however, an RCE, which might supply some more information.

David

PS Forgot to say that adult ages in 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so that someone aged 34 would be shown as 30; as would someone aged, say, 36, if they actually reported their age as 34 :!:

Hello David

Thanks for all the info but if you have a death record for Peter the I am sorry to say that this family is not mine. Peter and his wife died in Liverpool in 1912/13.

There is a Liverpool connection which I have yet to find and a great aunt to fit in somewhere as well. It looks like he has lied about his father's name and I am back to the birth and parents that I have already found.

I will have to send for more certs and see what information they contain regarding his father.

Many thanks
Heather
