Wm.Cunningham/Wm. Brogan (uncle & nephew??).....

Post by AnneMT » Sat Apr 22, 2006 2:05 pm

I wondered if anyone could connect with some of my ancestors, or give me some info to help.

Wm (born 1884) and Edward(born 1889) were sons of Bernard Brogan (b abt 1860) and Mary Duncan. They lived in Society St. Glasgow and lived with, or in same street, as Bernard's parents Edward Brogan/Janet Salmonds. Mary's parents were James Duncan/Eliz. Cunningham. Bernard and Mary were both dead by 1891 and Bernard's parents and sister were dead by 1894.

Found Wm.(age 17) and Edward(age 11) on 1901 census staying at 243 Main St., Shettleston, Glasgow. Wm. Cunningham (age 55) is Head of Household with wife Maggie (age 44),and Wm. and Edward shown as his nephews. Could this connection really be great nephews, if Wm. Cunningham was sister of Eliz. Cunningham, Mary Duncan's mother?

It would cost me a fortune, to check out these details, on Scotlandspeople site, as Cunningham is a common name, and I don't know Wm. Cunningham's wife maiden name, or parents of Wm and Eliz. (if same family)

Can anyone help???

Oddly enough both these families are run together but there are two heads of household just to confuse you!

A search for Cunninghams born in Shettleston in a certain range turn up several but for example....take Mary....you'll find her BC as:

1868 CUNNINGHAM MARY FINDALY

on which will contain the MC details of William and Margaret to which you can then find his parents.....

I'm still not certain you can prove anything going this route as it seems like Mary Duncan's parents names are recorded as James or John and her mom is Elizabeth Duncan, Cunningham, Brown, or McKenna. And those coming from her own sister Agnes!!! Ah'm most confused!

In a nutshell is looks like there might be some connection...but.......

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Anne,
This looks like William living with who I think is his 2nd wife in 1881.

If you look at the marriage entry of William Cunningham and his 1st wife Margaret McLean this should give you his parents' names.
WILLIAM CUNINGHAM
Male

Marriages:
Spouse: MARGRET MCLEAN
Marriage: 13 OCT 1865 Shettleston, Lanark, Scotland

Where was Mary Duncan born?

I can see Bernard and family in 1881 but don't see a Duncan family nearby.

Regards,
Annette M

Hello all

Nelmit is right...William first wife died from childbirth and he remarried in 1875....and both marriages show the same set of parents for him.

The only place I've found Mary Duncan is on the 1891 census the same year she died and birthplace is the ever helpful....Glasgow. I've not found Mary or her sister Agnes on the 1881 for certain try as I might! I wanted to make her be the Mary Duncan born in Kilwinning but it just doesn't fit :(

Best wishes
Jean

Wm Cunningham & Wm. Brogan (Uncle and nephew)??

Post by AnneMT » Sat Apr 22, 2006 7:25 pm

Thanks to everyone for all the help you have given. Even where a definite solution was not given, you convinced me I am not going insane (but nearly).

Mary Duncan's marr. cert.(1885) showed her parents as deceased. On Mary's death cert. I noticed her sister's name and added her to the tree. Her marr. cert, however, was, I think, where the rot set in. Mary, as elder sister, had called her father James, Agnes called him John. Think I gave up after that, because research was not important for that part of family.

It was just recently, when I discovered connection with Brogan orphans(one of my main lines of research), that I got involved again. Re Mary Duncan's parents, there are many marriages between Duncans and Cunninghams and not sure which is theirs if at all. Think this needs to be browsed at Records Office sometime. It is possible they did not marry at all.(tut tut)

Found William Cunningham's marr. cert and also have 1891 census details for Agnes Duncan and George Robb, showing Agnes as born in Glasgow.

Now need a cup of tea, and aspirin for my aching head. Bye
