I am researching Kenneth McLEAN (tenant) b 1795 Lochbroom d 27 Apr 1874 Leckmelm, Lochbroom. He married on 19 Dec 1822 in Lochbroom to Margaret ROSS chr 10 Nov 1796 in Rogart Sutherlandshire, d 10 Sep 1870 Leckmelm, Lochbroom. On their Marriage Banns Kenneth was living at Airdcharnich and Margaret was living at Ullapool.
On Kenneths death records it states his parents as John McLEAN and Christina MacKENZIE, but I have been unable to find this couple. Have checked for births, deaths and marriage banns on Scotlands People, but no luck. Also searched all the usual IGI, Ancestry.com, Family Search etc, but no entries. I am beginning to think that perhaps Christina died young and John remarried, but would love any tips on where else I may look. The only other info on John McLean is that he is listed as a blacksmith.
Thanks in advance for any help given.

Hi Tracey,
thanks for your reply. I haven't seen these, so I will certainly check them out. The first one at Applecross has the most appropriate date, but is a long way south of Lochbroom, but you never know, they may have come from down there. I had no luck finding them in Lochbroom area
so I may be lucky, and this gives me another area to search in.
The second one could be good to with the Stornoway area being closer, but the dates are a long way apart. But again, there are always surprises, aren't there
So thanks for your help and I will have a good check on these to see what else I can find.

Hi Sandy
I have just been noseing around the Lochbroom area and seen that alternative spellings for Christina are Chirsty, Christy, or Cursty and sometimes spelled Ciorstaig in Gaelic - which apparently was quite common name on the West Coast of Scotland ( i hope this is the west coast, my geography isnt too good !)
Good luck
Tracey

Thanks Tracey, your geography is OK, it is definately the west coast
Thanks for the names, especially the gaelic one as it sure helps to know all the variations. It will give me a lot more search options, which I think I will need with this pair.

Hi Sandy
Ross & Cromarty gravestone records are patchy as far As I'm aware - don;t know if this is an area you have checked? The Black Isle area seems to have been recorded but for other areas there seems to be no published record at all. The largest collection of MIs in SCotland is held at the Scottish Genealogy Society www.scotsgenealogy.com As well as a large library of MIs they have many published books of MIs whch can be purchased some for R&C:
http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/ ... ty_MI.html
The MIs for Wester Ross, Pre-1855 seems to include Lochbroom
There seems to be mention hereof Lochbroom MIs, so looks like some exist. Clicking the contact link leads you nowhere tho!
Best wishes
Lesley

Dear Lesley,
thanks for this info. I have checked out the sites, but can't actually access the MI records. On the HFHS site they sell the transcripts but the MI's for Wester Ross pre 1855 on Scotsgenealogy sounds like it might have the info I need. So I may have to purchase it if I can't find anything out in the mean time. So thanks for that.
I have put a few posts on forums to see if I can find out the actual graveyards in the areas I am interested in, Leckmelm and Ullapool, so might have some luck there to. So I will see how I go
thanks again.

Hi Sandy
The MIs mentioned are just the names of publications - I don't think there are any for that area that you can see online - but if you find any let us know
and I'll add it to the links at :
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4555
I gather the four graveyards which were mentioned above are in the area but there may be more, of course. What about contacting the local council - they should know what cemeteries are in their area surely? Ok, lets skip the "local" cooncil....
Maybe try Highland Council:
http://www.highland.gov.uk/livinghere/b ... remations/
then click on area contacts on the right side of the page.
I know you've had no luck with the local cooncil & their email address, but maybe you could be a bit cheeky & contact one of the ministers from a likely looking church? They should know where the cemeteries are!:

Hi Sandy
I'm a bit confused here - I thought you had said somewhere that you'd already contacted the local museum & the council - am I right? I can't see it mentioned here... was it another post? And I thought this post had a title to do with burials....
I must be losing it....
Anyway, just incase I've made it all up, heres the local museum!
http://www.ullapoolmuseum.co.uk/genealogy.htm
later:
Ah good, I've not lost it completely ...yet!! Its all in your other post!

Hi Lesley,
yes, I have another post under Cemeteries as I wasn't to sure how strick or what type of response I would get from this forum. I have to say, it is great, and I really appreciate the help you all have given me.
I have tried to contact the Ullapool Museum on a number of occassions, but my emails bounce back.
I have also emailed Rev Alasdair McLeod at the Lochbroom Free Church in Ullapool as several members of my family married there in 1857 and 1861 that I know of, and asked about church records and researchers in the area, but he just replied that he didn't know of any researchers and would let me know. But unfortunately he made no mention of church records. (I don't think he is into genealogy
I will give the council a try, I hadn't thought of that and I will also contact the other churchs in Ullapool and see what sort of response I get from them. At least they should be able to give me the names of the cemeteries, and should have an idea of where people would have been buried at the different times. I have also put up a request on RAOGK, so I may get some good info back from there
Thanks
