Thomas Moan.....

Post by MargaretS » Sun Apr 30, 2006 1:16 pm

This problem arose when I first started doing my family history 7 years ago, and I still haven't solved it. My grandmother's brother Thomas, born 1868 in Shettleston but moved to Catrine, Ayrshire (parish of Sorn)in 1869. He is present in the 1871 census but not a single census after that. He registered the death of his younger brother in 1883, and he died in Rosewell near Edinburgh in 1905, but I cannot find any trace of him in the in-between years. His death certificate said he never married. I have tried every spelling I can think of for Moan and nothing ever turns up. Anybody any ideas? The really annoying thing is that when I had the free 14 day trial on Ancestry, I forgot all about him and didn't check there.

Hi Margaret

What was his occupation in 1871 and where was he?

Also Where did the younger brother die?

The younger brother died in Catrine (Sorn Parish), and in 1871 Thomas was still down as 'scholar'.

Sorry more questions

Do you have his parents names and the name and d.o.b. of the younger brother.

Yes. His parents were John Moan and Mary McAnulty. The younger brother John was born 9 July 1875, I have all the certificates and census records for everyone else in the family. Thomas just vanishes into thin air after 1883 when John died, until early 1905 when I have a letter he sent to my grandmother from hospital where he was recovering (he thought) from TB. He died later that year.

Hi Margaret

I have searched for him in 1881 under every spelling of Moan I can think of. Even looked at every Thomas no surname in the Lowlands born around then -no joy. It must be mis indexed very badly or he was not counted for some reason.

Sorry

That's what I thought, but how could he avoid 1881, 1891 abd 1901. He must have been out of the country, but there is no family story to confirm this.

Hello Margaret,

I am puzzled by this, since I can not find the death of Thomas Moan or much about the family after 1883. Would you please supply details about what you do have for them?

Regards,

John

Hi Margaret,

Try this link to see how many variations of the name Moan can be found:

http://www.namethesaurus.com/Thesaurus/Search.aspx

It is mind boggling.

The one that came to me was Maughan, but I bet you tried that one!

Good luck,

Nina

For some reason they changed the spelling of their surname to Mone about 1885. All the children died in childhood except Elizabeth, Annie-Jane and Thomas. Elizabeth married James Campbell in 1892 and Annie-Jane married Archibald Davidson in 1898 both in Catrine (Sorn). Thomas died in Rosewell, Laswade in July 1905, he is shown as unmarried. His step-father David Fowler registered the death.
