Maggie Dunsmuir......Missing since 1891......

Post by ChristineW » Mon May 01, 2006 1:15 pm

Hello All

Despite not having posted - I have been lurking around for quite some time, picking up endless tips and links to help trace my ancestors. Although I’m inching slowly toward tracing various rellies back to the 18th century, I am blowed if I can find anything on my maternal gggrandmother since 1891.

What I’ve got so far:

Margaret Dunsmuir (born in Garrallan on 26. 04. 1870 to Charles Dunsmore and Catherine Fergusson) had an illegitimate child by John H Black on 17.12.1891. The child was named Robert Black on the birth certificate. (The child was brought up by his father and paternal grandmother).

(I’m not sure why Maggie and John did not marry as there appeared to be no impediments. I do suspect, however, that John’s mother Jane H Black - who was apparently, a very fearsome and status conscious lady - perhaps did not approve of such a union).

Maggie’s occupation on her child’s birth certificate was ‘Dairymaid’ - and, indeed, I found her on the 1891 census working at Dreghorn Dairy Farm in Ayrshire - and her address was shown as Glengyron Cottages (miners’ cottages where her parents lived in Old Cumnock).

I have found Maggie’s birth certificate, all her siblings’ birth (+ some death & marriage) certificates, most of her parents certificates but for the life of me, I cannot find anything on Maggie since she had her child in 1891.

I have spent a flipping fortune on SP - using every variation of the names Maggie and Dunsmuir I can think of - and found absolutely nothing. I’ve looked for possible marriages and death certificates from 1891-1953 and I even tried looking for her under her mother’s maiden name of Fergusson/Ferguson - but nothing.

I’ve tried various links from this site for poorhouses etc……..Nothing. I’ve read so many ships passenger lists that I feel acquainted with everyone who left our shores in the late 19th century. Still nothing.

Before I retire to a darkened corner, bash my head against the wall and cry - does anyone have any suggestions or leads that I might follow?

Yours in desperation!

Hello Christine!

So pleased you've joined the crowd! :D It appears like you've done a great deal of work on this one. We'll take a look at it and see if anything jumps out....(not to get your hopes up because it does sound like you've already looked in all the corners...but still...sometimes several heads are better than one) I've always wondered what I would do with several heads as it's a challenge to keep track of just the one though....

Best wishes
Jean

Christine,
Welcome to TalkingScot.
just some thoughts
I assume the son married so did he indicate anything about his mother status at the time of his marriage?
There are a lot of reason she cannot be found - she could have married and gone abroad under her married name.
She could have been a second wife so with existing children she would be hard to identify.
She could have justed lived with someone and taken their name without any marriage.
And of course she could still be alive after 1953 so maybe a trip to the GROS. for deaths after that date.

Hope these help

Hello Jean! Thanks for that! I've been lurking so long I already feel 'part of the crowd'!! I'm just a more official member now!

Hi Alcluith - Yes, the son married - however, his mother's name on the certificate was shown as his father's wife, rather than his birth mother (I hope you follow this!).

I can't find any marriage certificate for Maggie Dunsmuir - so I agree it is entirely possible that she lived with someone and simply assumed their name. And yes, she could have gone abroad with her new identity - or even just stayed in the next village, either way, she would no doubt dip below the radar! Thanks for your suggestions though - I suppose I still cling to the hope she can be found (for definite) somewhere!!

It is so very frustrating that, in some cases, it's easier to find information about someone who lived in the 1700's than it is to find out about someone from the relatively recent past!

Nose to the grindstone...................again!
Cheers
Christine

Hi Christine,
We all have our ](*,) here and with over 10 years of research experience I still get the odd surprise when someone, out of nowhere, open a door for me. This was the case for one branch of my family where I had been at the ](*,) for over two years, then an email arrived in my inbox and I was able to get information for all family from mid 1800's including a group photo. So never give up hope, maybe just put it on the back burner for while.

Hi Isobel - Thank you so very much for this - I really don't know how I missed it. I had almost resigned myself to not finding her - but now at least this lady can have her rightful place on our family tree, regardless of whether or not she was married to my ggggrandfather. After all, my mother's line came from the (illigitimate) child she bore - and I wouldn't be here without her!

Looks like the poor girl died not long after giving birth - sadly, an all too familiar tale in those times.

Once again, many many many thanks. I really feel like I've won the pools (and I know my Mum will be delighted too).

You are a treasure =D> Take a well-deserved bow! \:D/ \:D/

Cheers
Christine
