Help on Death Certificate for James Beattie.....

I am looking for infromation on a 1st wife for James Beattie.

The certificate that I have shows his date of death as 18 April 1923,it also shows reference to 2 marriages,1st person ??? 2nd person Margaret Holmes;it also shows that a Janet Gillespie daughter was present at time of death.

James was born C:-1835 in Kirkbean,Kbt

I can only find a marriage for Margaret Holmes & James.(in 1870)

I have found a birth for a Janet Callander Beattie (1873) who married a William Gillespie (no date)

I would welcome any help or information on this matter

If you could upload the certificate to the gallery we could all have a look at the 1st marriage entry and take it from there - might give us more to go on.

It would appear that this is a transcript, and the person who created it was not able to determine the first wife's name because it was illegible. I think the expectation was, that you had a copy of the registrar's page or the original document, and the offer was to help decipher the handwriting.

Have you tried looking on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ? searching for a marriage of James Beattie between 1855 and 1869?

Have you looked in the 1851 and 1851 census - you wouldn't get the wife's maiden name, but you would get the first name, which could help eliminate some of the registrations of all the James Beatties married in that time.

Thanks for the reply.
James was born C:-1835,married 1870 to Holmes making him 35 at marriage .
The only children that I can find start from 1872--1882.
Maggie Holmes died in 1886 aged 41.
