Ross David & one too many.....

Post by joette » Thu May 11, 2006 12:34 pm

plead total ignorance but my Ross' are doing my heid in.
My GGGrandfather Ross always gives his place of birth on Census as "Tain".Now I know his parentage-Isabella McPherson& William Ross-shepherd.Their are swathes of Ross' around the place & I am trying to pinpoint his siblings. Two signed his Marriage Certificate in 1870-Robert Ross & Isabella RossI have always just presumed they were sibs as their parents names are the same. However I have two David Ross's on the IGI to the same parents -one in Daviot & Dunlichity where his apparent sibs are born too& one born in Tain-1837& the Daviot one in 1838 which if it was reversed would presume that the 1837 one had died & they had recycled the name. There could have two Davids I suppose too.
Anybody suggest anything as I have spent a fortune on SP trying to track down a siblings Death to check Father's occupation.
As I remember too from my way back lost research the brothers, sister followed each other from East Greenock -Wellington St where David married Robina McDowall to Govan where they lived on the same st.
If they were indeed siblings then I have a contact who has submitted info to the IGI & he lives in Scotland & I have written but am impatiently awaiting a reply!
Hope this all makes sense as I am driving myself insane with this lot. :?

Hi Joette
I have Ross families in Easter Ross - may I suggest it is a very dangerous idea to make any assumptions about any Rosses in that area??

If you look at the census index for 1851 for Fearn parish (next door to Tain) for example, the most common surnames were:
Ross 511
McKenzie 221
Munro 181
McKay 111
McDonald 105
Vass 72
- so as far as I can work out that means that 43% of the population had the surname Ross. Its worse in Tain - 44% of the population have the surname Ross. :?
....If it is any comfort - they do my head in too. I can't offer any help, only commiserations from a fellow sufferer!!

Best wishes
Lesley
