You had me sratching my head for this one #-o {I used to work around the Renfrewshire/ Inverclyde schools testing hearing and used to know them all off pat}

My guess would be Highlanders Academy [ a primary School] on Mount Pleasant Street.
Do a search on http://www.multimap.com using the postcode - PA15 4DP will show you how close that was to Ann Street.
I recall it being a tall sandstone building which would certainly have been around in the 30's when your father was at school.

What "foot" did your father kick with?

Ann Street could cover Mearn's Street, Belville Street, St. Mary's (East Shaw St. and Captain Street) as well as Highlander's Academy.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Could also have been St. Columba's.

Or the original Mount School or Greenock High (at that time on Dunlop Street). The original Greenock Academy on the site of James Watt College would also have been state funded by that time as would St Mary's, Patrick Street. I was just doing the co-ed Primaries.
