Hi Ann
Not sure how you would trace the baptism - mabye start by checking the parents' marriage to see where they were married and if they are still living in that area then that would be the likely church. If, however, they have moved since marrying I guess you would need to look at the area where thay are living at the time of Alice's birth and find a church of the same denomonation, then contact them. Or maybe there would have been a church within the barracks? There is certainly one within Edinburgh Castle, where New Barracks was, but I don't know whether that would have been used by troops stationed there or if it was for grander ceremonial purposes only?
Although Edinburgh Castle has not seen action since 1745, a lot of today's castle dates back the next great military scare, the threat of Napoleon at the end of the 1700s. The biggest of these additions, the seven storey "New Barracks", finished in 1799, dominates the castle's western end and was intended to house 600 troops. (see picture of New Barracks on website)

..and a lovely old print here, showing New Barracks from the west end of Princes Street:

may also be of some help.

Best wishes

Hello Anne

Lesley's answer got me thinking. There is a chapel within Edinburgh Castle itself which would be the most likely baptismal place.

Russell
Working on: Oman, Brock, Miller/Millar, in Caithness.
Roan/Rowan, Hastings, Sharp, Lapraik in Ayr & Kirkcudbrightshire.
Johnston, Reside, Lyle all over the place !
McGilvray(spelt 26 different ways)
Watson, Morton, Anderson, Tawse, in Kilrenny

The chapel in Edinburgh Castle is St Margaret's Chapel. Not only is this the oldest surviving building within the castle, but also the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh.

Nowadays, the chapel as well as being a tourist attraction, is available to hire for weddings.

St Margaret's Chapel - Edinburgh Castle

(Pity its potential 900 or so years of OPRs are not around)

All the best,

Scottish naming KAY

Post by Ann E » Fri Jun 16, 2006 2:06 am

Has any one access to the 1851 census? If so could you please check to see if there are more than one Thomas KAY shoemaker with a son William? As, if William followed the Scottish naming of his children it doesn’t follow the pattern

Ellen LACEY & William Darryl Wilson KAY children Ellen, Alice Jane, Mabel , Len , Bertram Charles , Len , William Darryl, twins Darryl Frank. and Fred William, names in italic were stillborn or died young.

Thomas & Catherine KAY children Thomas, Rachael, Elizabeth, William, James (up to the 1851 census)

Thanks AnnE
