Hello Again,
I wonder if anyone out there can help me with another Rodger mystery ?
I'm trying to find a son of William Rodger, also called William. He was born in 1838, in Old/New Monklands, and was mentioned in the 1841 census as a scholar aged 13 yrs. As usual, he seems to have disappered from the 1851/61/71/81/91 census's.
Does anyone have any ideas ?
Many thanks,
Daryl

Hi Daryl
Some possibilites that leap to mind....
1. He died before 1855 and therefore there is little to no chance of finding a record of that. Have you looked for cemetery records?
2. He enlisted in military service and did not survive. The Crimean War was going on in the early 1850's for example.
3. He left for other shores....Ireland? England? USA?....Did any other family members emigrate???
Have you followed up on his parents deaths and any siblings marriages in Scotland? He might have been an informant or a witness to some event after 1855.
Sounds like you've eliminated all the possibles for a census. I can't believe a person could be missed from every single one save 1841. My first reaction is that he did not survive past 1851. And if you've eliminated all possible Statutory Marriages or Deaths that is even more evidence that he just wasn't around!
Sorry.....
Jean

Re: William Rodger Jnr. - Mystery
Thanks Daryl,
They should be easily found on SP, but the 1851 Gros. No. will probably be slightly different.

1851 cens 652 (636) Ed 28 p 9 (Old Monkland)
William RODGER 53, b Bothwell
Jane 19, b Airdrie
William 13, b Old Monkland
James 11, b Old Monkland
John 7, b Old Monkland
--
1861 cens 652-3 Ed 7 p 32 (Old Monkland)
William RODGER 62, b Bothwell
Jane 27, b Old Monkland
James 20, b Old Monkland
John 16, b Old Monkland
--
In Glasgow (Central) 1861 there's a William ROGER 22, b Old Monkland, but i'm guessing he's with -
Agnes ROGER 64, b Bothwell,
Elizabeth ALLAN 22 & Alexander 20 ALLAN both b Old Monkland,
& Robert ALLAN 15 b Carnock, Fife.
In Cambusnethan 1861 there is a William RODGER 23, but as born Carluke (not with parents),
but he is possibly the son of Thomas & Agnes Rodger - there's a 13 yr old Carluke born William with them in 1851.
Neither look promising, and i can't see any other suitable William RO(D)GER(S) in LKS 1861.
So you've still got a bit of a mystery - do you know when & where William married?

Hi Jack,
Thanks for that info! I'm afraid that I can't find any details of William marrying, so it looks like he disappeared from Scotland sometime after the census was taken in 1851, (unless he died). Something tells me that these Rodger's are a dodgy lot, and maybe have something to hide.
Regards,
Daryl
