stuck with john ballantyne!.....

Post by karenc » Sun Jun 18, 2006 9:34 pm

Hi everyone,

I am hitting a complete brick wall at the moment with john ballantyne. I would appreciate any suggestions or help.

Here is what i know about him:

He was married on November 1842 to elizabeth Parsell (who later changed her name to percival). His daughter who was joan ballantyne married in 1871 and on her marriage cert it states that he was deceased.

I dont know of any other children for him and elizabeth.

I have elizabeth (age 20) on an 1841 census in carluke, lanarkshire, still living with her parents and in the same household there is also a john ballantyne (age 25), who i assume is the same person as the one i am looking for. It states on the census that he is born outside the census county.

I have a death cert for his wife and she didnt die until 1901, he was definately dead then as she is a widow when she dies.

I have probably left you more confused now that when i started to explain my problem :? :!:

If anyone can help i would be really grateful, as it is now getting quite frustrating

Thanks

Karen

Hi Karen
The IGI gives this for what looks to be your couple:
JOHN BALLANTYNE
Marriages:
Spouse: ELIZABETH PARSELL
Marriage: 13 MAY 1842 Carluke, Lanark, Scotland

Have you looked for them in the 1851 census? - You might catch them with some other children perhaps and find out if John was still alive at that time & if so, it should state a place of birth for him. The daughter Joan - how old was she at the time of her marriage?

best wishes
Lesley

Hi Karen,
Unless Elisabeth PARSELL is as married in 1851 or 1861, it would appear hubby John had died by 1851.
Or they'd split up.
Joan seems to be the last child - you'd have expected more, but who is wee Jane ROSS?
Might be worth looking at what these censuses say.

Hi Karen
Interesting finds by Jack there. I like the bit about "Archibald was a long time lodger"

What was the occupation given for John at the time of his daughter's marriage? Just wonder if he had good reason (other than having died!) for not being with the household?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi lesley and jack,

Thanks for the help and suggestions, some of the census info i didnt have so that was helpful. I think it looks like john must have died before the 1851 census. On his daughters death cert and marriage cert he is listed as a miner and then a quarryman. Its highly unlikely that i will find a death record for him either because its in OPR :(

Oh well, never mind at least your help has managed to shed some light on the matter :D

Thanks again

Karen

Carluke deaths

Post by Jack » Mon Jun 19, 2006 10:27 pm

Hi Karen,
You might be lucky - the Carluke OPRs have deaths in these years.
--
1697 - 1809
1838 - 1854
--
But how well the records were kept, i couldn't say, and there may even be some gaps in the above years.
Possibly order the relevant film at your local LDS Family History Centre and have a look?

Hi Karen
Deaths seem to exist for Carluke in the OPRs so might be worth following up:

629. CARLUKE
629/1 B 1690-1819 M - D -
629/2 B - M 1694-1809 D 1697-1809
629/3 B 1820-54 M 1838-54 D 1838-54

MIs seem to exist for that area too but not sure about lair records - two other areas to try.
Lanarkshire MI - Lanarkshire Upper Ward. Pre-1855 MI. A4, 403pp.
Biggar, Carluke, Carmichael, Carnwath, Carstairs, Coulter, Covington, Crawford, Crawfordjohn, Dolphinton, Douglas, Dunsyre, Lamington, Lanark, Lesmahagow, Libberton, Pettinain, Symington, Walston and Wiston.

They'd have the MIs at the Mitchell Library and they can also be found in Edinburgh.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Jack and Lesley,

I have got some other ancestors who came from carluke so i have had some dealings with the OPRs for there before. I have found one death in the OPRs which was relevant, but from what i can tell whats on the film is far from the complete picture.

I will just have to try my luck and see what i come up with :!:

again, thanks

Karen
