Hi linda

Gotta have some more to go on here :? Where did you get the year of birth for Thomas? Do you know who Thomas was married to...ie the mother of Robert? On SP there are only two Thomas Bertrams born in 1869 anywhere so do you know what area he might have been from? On the other hand there are 17 marriages of a Thomas Bertram to anyone anywhere between the years of 1889 and 1917 and one of which has a tantalizing middle name of Burns....but his age doesn't fit an 1869 birth.....but it does support an 1879 birth year

Can't do much more than that without another clue....

Best wishes
Jean

Hi linda

Well my first guess is looking even more possible! The place of marriage of the Thomas Burns Bertram I found was in the Parish of Galashiels :D ! Still no way to be certain this is your couple. Since you know an exact date of birth for Robert and he was born in Scotland....why not just contact the GROS and request a copy of his Birth Certificate? This should state both his parents names. If the names align with those of this marriage in 1909 then you've just confirmed his mother....and will be able to obtain the names of both of their parents from their Marriage Certificate!

I looked for a death of Thomas Bertram between 1945 (known to be living) and 1955(last year of death records available online) but didn't find one. Any idea when Thomas died?

I have to assume that maybe Robert married in England????

Best wishes
Jean

Hi again linda

I was assuming Thomas was living when Robert married and 1955 is as far up as I can look online. Even with widening out a search for the death of Thomas to include 1942 there are none that make sense. Once you have the birth certificate details it should be quick work (famous last words  ) to find the right couple. Unfortunately you will not be able to locate the birth of Robert's sister Jean online either as it occurs after the cut off date.

In case you're not familiar with Scottish records you'll be pleasantly surprised at the level of detail on birth marriage and death certs compared to England!

Best wishes
Jean

There was a Pipe Major Bertram of the 4th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers during WW1; unfortunately I have no more information about him.

I think that Thomas Burns Bertram was born in 1878 and died in 1956.
He was P/M of the 1/4th Bn KOSB in/around 1915, but he is not mentioned in the book "The Pipes of War". However, the book mentions that "In Gallipoli the pipers were principally employed as messengers and bearers, and most of them became casualties. When the band was reconstituted the pipers were kept out of the front line."
He was also Pipe Major of the 2nd Scottish Border Battalion of the Home Guard from 1941 to 1944.
