Hello,
Just joined the group after being recommened by Heatherk.I am trying to ascertain whether the William Bottomley who married Anna Thomson on the 8th March 1844 in Glasgow is in fact my ggreat great grandfather. He went to Scotland sometime in the 1840's [I have been unable to find him on the English 1841 census] from Saddleworth, Yorkshire.Could anybody tell me what exactly the church records show?Would his father be named?I know that he married Mary Anderson Halliday in Dumfries in 1849 but I need proof of Anna Bottomley dying sometime between 1844 and 1849.It has suggested that she may have had the use of a mort cloth and that there would be records of this.Since I live in Lancashire I am not used to doing Scottish research and any help or advice would be much appreciated

Re: William Bottomley
Hello Dotty,
welcome to the board. I am unable to help with the marriage or death involving Anna Thomson, but I had some amusement in tracing this man's life in Scotland. He appears to have married several times and fathered children in and out of his marriages, and I wondered if you had traced much of this history.
Regards,
John

Hello John,
Thanks for the reply.I have just spent the last half hour typing my reply and then I lost it
.Here goes again.William was born in1821 son of Sarah Schofield,in 1822 Sarah marries David Bottomley in Saddleworth,Yorks.Sarah died in 1825 and I had no records of anything until I searched the 1881 census. There I found David Bottomley Schofield born Scotland which was quite a surprise and I couldn't understand Scotland.William had died 1874 so I sent for his death cert and his wife was named Margaret Cardey[born Carlisle]I then found an IGI birth entry for a David Bottomley parents William Bottomley and Margaret Cardey for 1859.By chance I came across the 1851 Dumfries census and there was William with his wife Mary and child Elizabeth so he was down as a widower when he married Margaret. The following are the details I know-
Births with William named as father
1849 Mary mother Margaret Briggs
1850 Elizabeth mother Mary Bottomley nee Anderson Halliday
1855 John mother Grace Caven
1859 Bottomley Bottomley mother Helen Hornal there was a paternity case with this in Feb 1860
1859 David mother Margaret Bottomley nee Cardey
Known marriages
1844 Anna Thomson still to be Proven
1850? Mary Anderson Halliday I need to find out if he was down as widower at this marriage
1859 Margaret Cardey and he stayed married to her not sure whether he was faithful with his record
By 1861 the family were back in England using the name Schofield and he went on to have about 6 more children. If you can give me more info it will be much appreciated. Many thanks Dotty .

Hello Dotty,
before I comment further, I would be interested in all the details of William's death in 1874.

Re: William Bottomley
Hello Dotty,
at first, I thought that there might be 2 William Bottomleys through conflicting information, but then I revised my thoughts because of consistency, but now there may be 2 death certificates. I suggest that obtaining the English death certificate is a priority to confirm that the death in Ashton really is your man.
There is a death of William Bottomley at Dumfries on 9th Nov 1875. He was 56, a woollen weaver, married to Grace Covens, and informant was son John Bottomley. However, he gave William's parent information as being an illegitimate child of Eliza Bottomley.
On John's birth in 1855, William said that he was 36, illegitimate, and born in Delph Yorkshire. (Delph was in the district of Saddleworth, if anyone else is following this thread).
The marriage of William Bottomley and Margaret Cardy in 1859 had William (36) stating that his parents were David and Sarah Bottomley, ms Schofield.
The 1871 census for Dumfries has William Bottomley (mis-indexed as Bottomely), 50, woollen weaver, born England. Also present are Grace Kevins (probably Grace Cavens above), and the children, all known as Bottomley, viz. Margaret 20, John 14, Mary Jane 13, and Catherine 11. Later marriages for the children show that they all claim to be the offspring of William Bottomley and Grace Cavens.
Also in the 1871 census is William Bottomley, 12, living with his mother Helen Hornal. When he married, as William Hornall Bottomley, he described William Bottomley as his reputed father.
Other events were:
Mary Bottomley, ms Halliday, died in 1858. She was described as "wife of a hand loom weaver in woolen factory" without naming him, and the informant was her mother Jane Halliday or Smith.
Mary Bottomley died at 14 in 1863, with her parents named as William Bottomley and Margaret Briggs (deceased). The informant was (poor handwriting, so guessing) Agnes Dobie, second cousin.
I would be interested to see if William (Bottomley) Schofield is in the 1871 census, east of Manchester (Mossley, Stalybridge, etc).
Regards,
John

Re: William Bottomley
Hello Mary,
many thanks for that: you are a treasure, as always. I was about to e-mail you to ask the lookup as a favour, but no need now!
The place is Heyrod: it is on the A635 between Stalybridge and Mossley.
The information is what I feared: there were two of them, one of whom appears to have changed his name to Schofield. It explains the different information about parents, and the significantly different signatures on 1855 and 1860 births. And one person would have needed to be as randy as a stoat to achieve that many births. But 2 people of about the same age, same occupation, and rare (for Scotland) name, in Dumfries town at the same time!
I shall have a lie-down before returning to this.
Regards,
John

Hello John,
Just read the replies with great interest and confusion.I know that back in England for the 1861 census using Schofield as their name and living at Backston Pit[I think that is in the Delph area of Saddleworth]
William38
Margaret 33
Elizabeth 10 I presume this is William and Mary Anerson Halliday's daughter
Charles 8 mother ?
Agnes 4 mother ?
David 1 this is William and Margaret Cardey's son
William was buried in St Chads churchyard at Saddlworth
Will get back to you if I think of anything else

Good Morning and a Happy Easter to you all.
Dorothy , a search on SP reveals a Charles Schofield born 1852 Dumfries , mother Halliday - I've just run out of credits , so I couldn't check but I'm sure its "your" Charles.
As for Agnes - if her age is correct - she was born after statutory registration was introduce - so she be found somewhere . on the IGI there is an Agnes Cardy born 17 NOV 1856 Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland, mother Margaret Cardy , bo father mentioned...
I have read all these posts with great interest . Great detective work from John and Mary. I think I know why one Bottomley was so keen to change his name ....
I'm off to roll my eggs in the Ardennes ..
