Hi Folks,
I have a somewhat intriguing problem.
Ladies & Gents - I give you the case of the sometime brother.
In the parish of Kirkden in Forfarshire there lived a large farmer’s family, well I don’t know if the farmer himself was large it’s just that he had many children.
Robert Hood & Ann Paterson of Dubton
James b1842 - d1915
William b1844 - d ?
Mary P Hood b1846 - d1919
Robert Hood b1848 - d1887
Anne P Hood b1852 - d1915
Charles Hood b1855 – d ?
Jessie Hood b1857 – d1934
Margaret Hood b1859 -.d ?
All of the above dates & names have been verified via OPR’s, Statutory Records and Census’s, now the problem.
In the 1881 Census of Kirkcaldy an Andrew Hood is mentioned as Robert & Jessie’s brother, his age given as 27, he also appears as to register Robert’s death in 1887 and is also mentioned as an executor/beneficiary of Robert’s large Will. The trouble is that this is the only mention Andrew has in the Hood record’s. There are no OPR/Statutory record’s concerning his birth, nor any mention in the 1861 or 1871Census (everyone else is!), nor is there any marriage or death cert that I can obviously see. Even if he slipped in between the OPR and Statutory Records in 1854 he should have appeared somewhere.
I’m bamboozled, any theories as to where he comes from, or goes to for that, would be gratefully welcomed.
Thanks in anticipation
Jack

The Sometime Brother?.....
I'd like to be apathetic but I really can't be bothered.
Looking for blacksheep & not finding any with
Groats & Stevensons in Orkney, Hood's in Dundee/Angus, Mclaren's in Clackmannan and Jolly's in Kincardineshire. There may be more!

Hi Jack
Ok....I have to ask it.....and since you have all the records handy you surely already know the answer.....any chance Andrew and Charles are one and the same person????? I mean is there an occasion where they are both named on a census...or is it always one or the other???
Next question....based on the exact christening or birth dates of Ann P. and Charles is it humanly possible to conceive and deliver another child?
Those were my first, second and best guesses
...after that I'm as bamboozled as you.......but will keep thinking...
k
Best wishes
Jean

Ooops one more brainwave just in.
.....on the 1855 birth registration of Charles how many children does it state that Robert and Ann have...how many boys and how many girls??? And does this figure tally with the list you have provided....or do you need one more boy to make it come out right????
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
Thanks for the prompt reply, I been kind of busy with other things.
Sometimes life gets in the way of this enjoyable hobby.
AnyHoo.
That was a good call about checking the 1855 Census. Yes at that time it states there was 4 Boys & 2 Girls. So there was one missing, ah ha.......
However on closer inspection of the 1871 there is a faint inscription for a male squigle of 7 ie born 1864. However a bit of searching for an Andrew Hood born 1862-7 came up trumps. There he was Born in 1863 with the right pedigree at the right place, only 10 years younger than the 1881 Census so I don't know if the enumerator took the age down wrong or it was a mis-transcription, who knows.......
Anyway I've found the sometime brother, but I now have to go back and try and figure if there's one more brother to be found pre-1855.
Again thanks for your help, now back on track

Take into account as well the strong Scottish tradition that it was the eldest son who was the informant for his father's death. In other words, for whatever reason, - record never made, wrongly transcribed, hasn't survived, - he doesn't appear in the OPR. Have you had a look in the OPR around the time that he "should" appear?
Or, see below, in this case was it the youngest brother, still at home, who ended up reporting his father's death?

Hi David,
I hope you had a successful and enjoyable trip 'Down Under'.......
Thanks for the list of Hoods. They match with my corrected list now, I forgot to include David Paterson in my list, had him all the time, must been hiding when I wrote the list down.
With all Hoods present and correct now, I only have the niggle about the 1881 census which caused the problem in the first case. In your experience would the mistake be on the enumerator/transcription side or did Robert or Andrew tell a 'porkie' for one reason or another?
Again thanks for the confirmation.
Jack

I'd want to see the original enumeration book before commenting .......... could also have been bad writing on the part of whoever in the household filled in the schedule.
