On an 1856 D C for EUPHEMIA LEITCH it states Parents names as ANDREW FOTHERINGHAM & EUPHEMIA HEAN? Could be HAYNE.
I can find no marriage for ANDREW & EUPHEMIA but IGI & S P searches bring up a Marriage that fits in for an ANDREW FOTHERINGHAM & ELSPETH HAYNE.
This naming brings up 3 children on IGI one of whom could be EUPHEMIA/EUPHAN ,the birth date fits.
Do I take it as being a simple error on the part of informant to DC (son)
as I can't find a M C for Euphemia and hubby JOHN LEITCH
All of this is in COLLESSIE FIFE.

Hi Maureen
In 1856 when you look at the number of birth and mariage certificates signed with an 'X' you realise how many ordinary people had to start work at the age of 6,7,or 8 just to survive and augment the family income even by a few pennies.
Schooling and literacy was not a right but a privilige.
If a Registrar asked about spelling the son would have no idea of how his mother's maiden name was spelt. I doubt the Registrar would even bother to ask. He would write it down as he heard it and if the son had a strong accent then it could be written in five or six different ways.
Even the Registrar would not be consistent in his spelling. We have one certificate where the bride was McGilvray her mother's, father's and brother's names are all spelt differently
On the same certificate
Your IGI finds are highly likely candidates. Fife records are pretty consistent (even if the spelling is highly variable) Euphemia or Euphane were quite common but you could do a quick check on IGI just for the surname Hayne to see how common it was in that area.
Be a bit flexible in name searches and when you go to scotlandpeople for certificates do 'wildcard' searches like H*an* and Euph*
Leitch could be Le*H since it could be Leech/Leach/Leetch. This would also bring up the name Leith so it should be used witha bit of care.
Good luck

Thanks Annette,
I have that one.
What I am trying to establish is who was EUPHEMIA 'S mother.
On her Death Cert it states her Mother as EUPHEMIA FOTHERINGHAM maiden name HEAN, but there is no record of a Marriage for a EUPHEMIA HEAN and ANDREW FOTHERINGHAM .
What I found was an ELSPETH HAYNE married to an ANDREW FOTHERINGHAM and wondered if this is what her Mother's name should read on the D C

Hi Maureen,
This may not be much help but on one of the DCs I have found the woman's mother's name has been given as Elizabeth Small MS McDonald. The informant on the DC was her son, so I assumed it would be correct info, but it turned out he had given his his sister's married name instead of his grandmother's maiden name, which was Robertson, and her first name was also Ann, not Elizabeth. The same thing also happened on another DC I found more recently, with the maiden name given as Findlay when it should have been Lundie. So it's possible that the informant on the DC of Euphemia has given the wrong first name and her mother's name was really Elspeth, not Euphemia. Just my opinion though so could be wrong. If you know of any of Euphemia's siblings, you could try to find their DCs, etc to see if the mother's name differs?
Good luck,
Cat
