Last of My 3x GG.....
Hello,
I've got only one set of 3x GG that I haven't nailed down yet and I'm hoping someone can provide opinioins or information to help. I keep feeling like I have all the pieces but can't put the puzzle together.
I'm looking for the parents of:
Margaret Bain
Married: James Miller on June 23, 1882 in Freswick, Canisbay.
On her marriage certificate it says her parents are James Bain and Elizabeth Sinclair (both deceased). I haven't had much luck with those names.
On her death certificate it says her parents are James Bain and Elizabeth Manson. Using these names I find a Margaret Bain born in 1856 in Olrig.
There's also a John Bain and a Sinclair Manson who have a Margaret Bain born in Wick during 1859 who is the right age.
I been puzzling over this one off and on for about 3 months now.

This looks like Margaret living with brother James in 1881 along with her husband to be.James Clark wrote:Hello,

It would be worth a look at her brother's marriage to see what he says about parents.

I had a search on Scotlands People and I see what you mean.James Clark wrote:Thanks Annette. That is an excellent idea. However, I've been unable to find any trace of that marriage either.
There is one James Bain who married in Wick in 1877 - Not to an Alexandrina though but Williamina.

I also had that 1881 census information as the main (and only so far!) possibility for Margaret Bain.
I decided to day to look up the children listed as her nieces and nephews on the census.
I started with little George B and found out that he is not the son of James and "Alexandrina" Bain. His birth certificate (1880 - George Baikie Bain) lists Margaret as the mother and he is illegitimate.
I moved on to James Bain (aged 3) and found 2 matches so I didn't check them yet.
Then I tried Helen (aged 3). I found only 1 match and the parents were James Bain and Williamina Barnetson. James' mother's name was Mary Manson.
I thought I was on the right track, but now I have one more possibility for Margaret Bain's mother's name! (Elizabeth Sinclair, Elizabeth Manson and Mary manson)
Due to a mis-indexed entry under little George Bain's death certificate I'm now out of credits again. I was looking to see what his fathers name was. (Hopefully I'll get 5 back shortly!)
This one's turning out to be quite confusing.

Hi James
I can fully sympathise with you as one of my main names is Bain - originally for a wee village south of Wick called Sarclet. I have pages upon pages of searches/certs from SP which I will look through to see if any are any use to you as I turned up a lot that had no connection to me

Bain/Manson
Hello James,
I think what you need here is an expert on Caithness.
I searched the 1881 census for an adult George Baikie to see who wee George may have been named after and found this one living with a Manson family just 'along the road' from Margaret and James Bain.

Cracked it I thought to myself then discovered nearly every household in that district has a Manson living there
Obviously Fiona has had her problems in tha area. Here's hoping she can help.
Kind regards,

Hi James
Apologies if you already have this but this is the entry in the MI's for Keiss
no 37
James Miller from Nybster 12.1818 age 70, wife Margaret Calder 1.12.1820 age 70, erected by grandson George Bain from Nybster:Margaret Bain died Upper Thuster 12.11.1932 age 76, husband James Miller 13.9.1937 age 77
Realise it doesn't help with names of the parentsts of Margaret though!

Hi James
Monumental Inscriptions.
You can buy these books - I got mine from the Scottish Genealogy Society but I think you can get them through Amazon aswell.
They are by Cowper & Ross. I find them very helpful so if you would like me to check anyone else out then please just say. I also have one for Sutherland.
