I lost contact many years ago with a Colin Carswell of Troon (we were at school in Alloway - 1952-1956 - yes, not recent!!), and despite many attempts, have been unable to find him or his family. His father I recall was involved in (Family Business?) Carswell Tailors - locations now unknown, as is his first name. Mother I'm sure was Connie.
Any wizards here?
Thanks,
James.

But ye didnae say Cambusdoon (public school) , - sadly demolished some years ago, - on whose cricket pitch Ayr Academy played their home games.kinsearcher wrote:"I don't know if I quite believe this..............

Isn't there an FP society?
How about a letter to the Ayrshire Post ?(or Ayr Advertiser if that still exists), - Carswells was a very well known local quality tailor. Were you also a contemporaryof the COSH family? (the premier Ayr licensed grocer).

Hi David,
Actually, the Cricket Ground wasn't on cambusdoon property as such though next door and between the school and the (in)famous Cottage.
I recall sneaking around the back of the Club Pavillion and sampling beer etc while trying out smoking for the first time - now I suffer for all that.
I located someone who reputedly did (free) searches in and around Troon that I found through a Troon (I think) website - nbg.....!
I played golf with Colin at Troon. Visited his family a number of times, and, with that well known name I'd have thought this was easy. Hmmpphhh!
Not tried newspapers, nor found any trace of a FP Association.
COSH? No memory of that name at all. Holidays were spent initially out near Dalmellinton ('Ardoon', Dunaskin ...) Uncle was an NCB Inspector.
More memories returning!
James.

Hi James
My enduring memory is my last match, - being bowled for a duck, - watching the ball coming towards me, knowing from the moment that it left the bowler's hand that it was heading directly for the stumps but unable to get the bat in the way.
Then later, fielding, running for a ball, but quite unable to get anywhere near it, despite the "encouraging" shouts of my team-mates, and feeling as if I was running in slow motion, unable to run any faster.......
Less than 24 hours later I was in Ballochmyle with rheumatic fever
Have you tried the simple idea of a guid Google?
Someone from Ayr/Troon is bound to be able to re-connect you to the Carswell family.............
David

Thanks David,
Before Google arrived there was Copernic - I used that as well.
My roots incidentally are in Kilbirnie.

Annette,
Thanks. Actually, I wasn't aware they were still there as I seem to have been misinformed (elsewhere) that they weren't there now. Maybe there's someone there operating under old shop name. Shame they don't have an email address eh?
Cheers,
James.
