Help needed tracing Archibald Kinloch.....

Post by aussie*family » Wed Jul 05, 2006 10:05 am

Hi,

I am very new to all of this but have managed to have some great results in tracing my scottish family tree on my fathers side, but I have hit a few brick walls. The first one is with Archibold Kinloch. He married Maragaret Millar/Miller 16 May 1816 in New Kilpatrick Dunbarton. I would greatly appreciate any help with tracing him back further.

The only Arhibald Kinloch I can find died in 1800 and is of the Kinlochs of Gilmerton. It sounds like a fairly uncommon name not to be an ancestor but I am stuck for how to find out. I cannot find a birth record other than Archibald Kinloch born 31 December 1749.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am in Australia therefor I do not have access to the local scottish resources. Thank you for your time

Kindest regards,

Senga :D

Hello and welcome to TS,

Have you tried searching Scotlands People?
There is an Archibald Kinloch of around the correct age died in 1873 age 78. If you look at the death entry it should hopefully give his wife's name and parents.

Kind regards,

Hi Senga
...and a warm welcome to Taking Scot. :D

Have you used the Scotland's People site at all?
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
There are three Archibald Kinlochs, aged over 40 in Dunbartonshire in the 1841 census according to the free search on SP. I've not looked to see what ages they are exactly or which part of Dunbartonshire they are in.
The census would at least tell you if he was born "in county" or "not in county" Unfortunately, by 1851, when the census would have given you a little more useful info, there seem to be no Archibald Kinlochs aged over 50 in Dunbarton area.

Not doing too well on births either - Arch k*n*ch, 1770-1810 = none returned which could mean that the spelling is so way off in the OPR that he is not showing (three seem to have been born between 1810-1820, possibly those who turn up in the 1841) OR that the area he was born in did not keep records of birth...

Another line of investigation might be a death, if deaths were kept for the are he lived in, or a monumental inscription, if you are lucky. He may even have survived past 1855...the one above looks very hopeful, died Dunbarton.
The going gets tougher for everyone in the period you have now reached - you are not alone! :D

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Senga,
As rightly suggested, you'll find Archibald KINLOCH in the censuses at ScotlandsPeople.
The 1851 (and 1861 & 1871 too) should say where Archibald was born.
Names below are from indexes, and it would seem that wife Margaret MILLAR has died by 1841.
--
1841 census 500 Ed 9 p 11 (New or East Kilpatrick)
Archibald KINLOCH 50
Ann 20
Archibald 15
John 15
Margaret 10
-
1851 census 500 (395-2) Ed 1 p 1 (New or East Kilpatrick)
Archibald KINLOCH 60 [but Annette has found SP has it as KINLOCK]
Ann 30
Archibald 25
Margaret 20

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Thank you one and all ...what an overwhelmingly helpful group of people you all are. I am so glad that I endevoured to post on this forum :D

Yes I have used the Scotland's People website, that is how I have managed to get this far (what an expensive little hobby this is turning out to be, LOL). I think with all my enthusiasm and excitement it must have totally slipped my mind to have searched the census for him and now knowing that I can search for his death certificate means I should hopefully be able to delve further, fingers crossed. It is rather frustrating when it all seems to come to a dead end, but I must say that this has been the most rewrding thing I have done in a long time, I'm loving it!

Two quick questions though, Ann is listed on the 1851 census at home with her father yet I have her married in 1846 to Matthew and she is on the 1861 census with him. My question is were they listed in more than one entry or would she have been at home and Matthew have been somewhere else? Secondly, under birth entries in a search when it specifies sex and there is a U what does that stand for?

You people are marvellous and it is wonderful to know that I have such a lovely community to come to for help and advice :D

G'Day from Australia

Try 1865 For Archibald's Death

Judging by the the reference numbers, there may also have been another Archibald who died in 1823 age 1

The rest of the family are there too.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).
