Help Please with and address in Glasgow.....

Post by bonniegirl » Thu Jul 06, 2006 8:55 pm

I have come a long way in the search for details of my maternal grandmother Mary Campbell Harvie Findlay b. 1902 (who I always thought died in childbirth). Not going into great detail I know when she left my grandfather in 1932 she went on to have a further 4 children all born in the 1930s in Glasgow . I really really want to find out what happened to her and have researched, found and written to 2 cousins (1 in Glasgow - didn't reply) 1 in Manchester (emigrated to Spain) that were available on 192.com with addresses. Of the 2 uncles and 2 aunts I think 1 called Leslie Kinnaird still lives in Glasgow (wife called Mary) who will be 69 now.

Anyone help with an address for him as I plan to go to Glasgow on Saturday and want to visit him. (I am not a loony by the way) Just want to know what became of my grandmother, and to be able to tell my mother what became of her mother after she left them.

Thanks

Bonniegirl

Hi BG,
There is one L. KINNAIRD on http://www.192.com/index.cfm - in the Ruchazie area of Glasgow.
But possibly phone first?
Apart from maybe giving him a shock by arriving on his doorstep unannounced....he might not be who you are seeking.
Jack
ps, i don't know if the "L" is for Leslie - it might be.
And very often a widow will retain her late hubby's name in the phone book.
This isn't to say that even if it is the right family, that Mary is a widow - but best to remember she may be,
and could very well be upset by someone asking for him....
Contacting modern day relatives can be a sensitive situation....

Hi Jack

Thaks for your advice on the door knocking. I had a look at 192.com but I think my U Leslie is the one below without the telephone number and address on it with Mary as the other occupant and we know that he married a Mary Semple from our trip to the Registrars. I don't want to frighten the life out of the man but I don't have a phone number to contact him. We do have an address from the 1960s, which he may still be at.

thanks again

Hi BG,
The L. Kinnaird is on this page - http://tinyurl.com/hzgbb
Had to use TinyUrl because of the length.
A lot can happen in over 40 yrs - people often move, but i presume the address is still on a modern day map?
Many Glasgow streets have been demolished since the 1960s.

Hi BG
There is a Leslie Kinnaird on www.b4usearch.com - but no 'phone number.

Go easy with it, as Jack suggested.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley,
The adddress is in the Mount Florida area - in the south side of Glasgow.
Many folk nowadays prefer to be "ex-directory", even though they do have a phone,
and others, like myself who are on cable, aren't listed at all. So could be either.

BG, maybe write asking if you could visit them, and give your own phone number?
But this would be too late now for this Saturday.

Jack and LesleyB - thanks for the advice. Also, that site that Lesley provided a link to was excellent, not heard of it before. I now have the address needed and am positive that it is my Uncle Leslie.

I have also taken your advice and have written a letter which I will post. I have asked him to call me and will let you know the outcome whether he does or does not.

I am still going to Glasgow tomorrow though (shopping) but will have patience and wait till I hear from him - fingers crossed.

thanks again

Hi BG
That seems like a sensible decision - well done. I was a bit concerned about the poor man, I would have to admit!

I do hope all goes well and the outcome is positive for all concerned. Hope its not too long a wait for the reply.

Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley & Jack

I've got fantastic news for you both - got a call at tea-time tonight from my Uncle Leslie in Glasgow :D He said that him and his wife (Mary) read and re-read the letter and were quite amazed by finding out that he had an older sister (my mum) as my grandmother had never talked about her 1st marriage. He asked how he could help me and my first question to him was quite morbid I suppose cos it was "when did my grandmother die" which was 11/07/98 - 8 years ago tomorrow!!! She was 96. The reason we could not find a death here in Scotland was due to her dying in Mansfield, England. She married for a third time to a wealthy Glasgow shop owner and moved down to London with him. It's a strange feeling to know that as recently as 8 years ago she was still alive and I'm wondering if she ever thought about her 1st born and whether she had more grandchildren or what. But then she was used to leaving family behind as she was never in touch with her 3 siblings and mother & father after marrying my grandfather in 1923.

We were on the phone for about half an hour and found out loads and they were amazed by the info I could give to them.

In 2 weeks time I am visiting Leslie & Mary in Glasgow and looking forward to it very much. They have photos to show me of my grandmother and I will get the address of an aunt in America.

Lesley - it was thanks to your info for the link to that web site that we got the address - I am so grateful for your help.

Can't believe after all the detective work we have found the long lost relatives at last. Just shows it pays to keep plodding on ..... and on.

Thanks again

BG

ps I have had a lot of success in the family tree going back to the early 1700s on one line. It was just that this particular mystery became an obsession!!!!

Hi BG
Wonderful news. \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/
Really pleased for you and thanks so much for getting back to us with the good news. I'm so glad it all worked out - you must be really looking forward to meeting your Uncle and aunt - fantastic stuff! =D>

Its these sort of highs which make it all worthwhile & gives a little hope to others that they may just find those long lost relatives - "plodding on" sometimes pays off in the end! Well done. Hope all goes well - very best wishes for your reunion.

Lesley
