A little Mystery for you.....

Post by delmarco » Sat Jul 08, 2006 10:25 pm

Margaret Grattan , nee McMenemy married Edward Grattan

I have them on the 1881 census, in Cambusnethan

Dwelling: 144 Stewarton St
Census Place: Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203621 GRO Ref Volume 628 EnumDist 14 Page 21
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Edward GRATTAN M 23 M Girvan, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Coalminer
Margaret GRATTAN M 24 F Rutherglen, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
John GRATTAN U 5 M Wishaw, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Andrew GRATTAN U 3 M Wishaw, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
James GRATTAN U 8 m M Wishaw, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son

Margaret Died in 1886, along with daughter Bridget. In 1888 Edward remarried, Margaret Murray. In 1899, Edward died also in Cambusnethan
at 135 Smith Land, listed as a pauper, formerly a coal miner.

Heres the Mystery....I cannont find any of Edward and Margaret McMenemy's children on the census' 1891 or 1901, nor can I find Margaret the new wife.....

Any ideas?????

Karen

Hi Karen

Have you tried the GrattOn family in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire in 1891 - there's Edward, MAGGIE, John, James and Andrew all within a year or so of the right age. I've not looked at the records in case you already ruled them out.

Best wishes

Hi Karen
Soudex is not that great...better to have used Grat*n which would cover one or two ts and any vowel or any other letter(s) at all following that before the final letter n. Even the unlikely"Gratyn" would be covered!

Best wishes
Lesley

Yes Lesley that's how I uncovered Gratton, then by process of elimination got to the actual name. For Margaret I tried Ma*, got a few hits, then Mar*, Marg* (0) so tried Mag* and went on to Magret, finally reaching Maggie. Could have done a shortcut straight from Margaret to Maggie, but wanted to rule out other possibilities.

Fingers crossed it's the right family

Best wishes
