Good evening everyone!
Starting this September, I will be flying over to Cardiff four times a year for a week each time for the next two years to study for a MTh. in Chaplaincy Studies at St. Michael's College. My question may sound really odd but is there a way I can access the Scottish birth, marriage, death records and OPR's from Cardiff at a Registrar's Office or would I be able to only access English/Welsh records (which won't do me any good at all). If I can't access any Scottish records in Wales, then would I have to go to Glasgow/Edinborough to access them? The course is four days so it only gives me two days left to do anything before I fly back to Canada. Any suggestions would be most appreciated as I would like to make the best use of my time that is available.

Don't think you'll be able to do any sensible from Cardiff.
Only possibility that I can think of is fly into Glasgow, then down to Cardiff by air or train, taking a side trip to Edinburgh ..... as as I'm aware there's no flights into Edinburgh from Canada ...... I tell a lie, Globespan http://www.globespan.com/checkavailCA.asp has flights from Toronto .......

Hi Allison
Alternatively, you could fly cheaply from Cardiff to Edinburgh for the day via BMI Baby.
I live in Cardiff and that's what I do. If you book your flights well in advance you can get really good deals. I just booked last week for our annual Hogmanay trip, and got the flights for ZERO, just paying the taxes, £13.95 each way per person, so total cost per person £27.90. Was most impressed to get that for Hogmanay time
. The closer to the date you travel, the more expensive it gets.
If I'm going to Edinburgh for research, I take the 7am flight up, getting there 8.30am ish, and the return flight at 6.30 - 7pm ish, getting back into Cardiff around 8 - 8.30pm so get a full day at the Records Office.

Kind Regards
Ellen.
NB - Allison I just noticed you are going to be studying at St Michaels College, which is literally 2 minutes walk from my home (and on the way to my regular watering hole
. If you're looking for a friendly face who has similar interests, let me know when you'll be in Cardiff, and I'll happily meet up with you.

David and Lesley:
Thanks for your responses. I was hoping but it would seem for naught. I actually fly to Heathrow early Monday morning and take the train to Cardiff to start classes in the afternoon which continue until 9:pm or so. Classes then continue Tuesday, Wednesday and finish up Thursday so making a side-trip in Scotland won't work when I arrive.
However Lesley's idea of flying from Cardiff to Edinborough might work after I am finished on Thursday morning. My husband and I have taken advantage of BMI's cheap flights before but that was before they started restricting luggage. We'll see.
Lesley I'd love to meet a friendly face when I'm at St. Michael's. Once I have a better idea of what will be going on, I'll let you know and look forward to meeting you.
In the meantime, if anyone else has ideas, I'd love to hear them.

David:
That would be great! As I have never been to Edinborough much less even to where one would access the records, it would be good to see a "friendly face" who knows the "in's and out's" and could give suggestions as to how to navigate strange waters.
Much appreciated. When my course schedules are firmed up, I will probably take you up on the offer, especially when my husband is able to accompany me. While I am searching records, he can dexplore various and sundry places during the day, after we arrive in Edinborough. Twice a year that will happen as we can extend the holidays to include Cardiff as well as other places. Otherwise it isn't financially feasible to rent a car for three days (I'm no good at navigating when jet-lagged therefore the reason for taking the train or flying to various places). It would be great to put faces to names and to receive suggestions on how to get the most out of researching.
Looking forward to putting a face to the name.
