Help needed with Samuel McVie the Sweetie man.....

Post by moragb » Tue Jul 11, 2006 11:01 pm

Hi, I wonder if anyone out there can help me. I have a Samuel McVie who married Jean McFadzean (McFadyean) on 27th July 1793 in Coylton Parish, Ayrshire. They had 10 children that I have found so far: Thomas, Alexander, John, a second Thomas, Cunniham Smith McVie, Margaret, Elisabeth, Adam, Jean and Samuel Jnr all born in Coylton.

Samuel McVie was the owner of Kiddies Toffees and had his home and factory at 32 Portland Road, Kilmarnock which is still in existance. If anyone has information on Kiddies Toffees that would be great, I do vaguely remember them in a red tartan tin?? However I can't find any trace of him before 1793 when he married. If anyone can assist me in finding where he was born, there is a thought that he might have been born on the East Coast or near Wigtonshire.

Jean McFadzean's parents are James McFadzean and Elizabeth Doak

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Morag :D

Hi Morag (great name that - my sister is Morag too!)

Can't be much direct help - have you considered any different spellings for McVie? Wondered about McPhee/McPhie McFee/McFie as they all sound very similar and when spoken with a guid Ayrshire accent, could an error have crept in.

Hi Liz,
thanks for the compliment on the name, when I was at Junior school I hated it and wanted to call myself Melanie????? As to the McVie puzzle, I had tried every version of McVee, McVay etc etc but not thought along the McPhee line, makes sense, thanks for the input. I'll try it tonight after I am released from the salt mills

take care
