Looking in all the right places, in person.....

Post by susannolan1 » Wed Jul 19, 2006 10:22 pm

I have been researching my paternal grandmother who was born in Airdrie in 1892. Her name is Elizabeth Millar Richardson. I have a few bits and pieces of information:

Parents names-William Richardson and Kathrine Grieve
Her parents were married in June of 1891 in Dalkeith
Confirmed in Edinburgh at Holy Trinity Church on Dec. 13, 1907
I wrote to the church and they no longer belong to the Scottish Episcopal Church. I have writtern to the General Register Office for Scotland to see if they have any information on the family.
I know she came over to America more then once because I had a ship manfest with her name on it from Dec. 1904.

My question is, what else can I do in preparation on my trip over there? I intend on going to the General Register Office in Edinburgh. Can anyone suggest where in Glasgow or Airdrie I should go for information?
We will be in the area Aug. 10th - 16th.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hi,

It might be a good idea to visit Park Circus rather than New Register House if you are planning visits elsewhere in Glasgow. That would cut down on some travel. If you are planning on visiting the national archives however then NRH is probably the better option.

Where you look depends alot on what you are looking for. Is your research mainly aimed at your paternal grandmother and if so what information are you looking to find on her?

The 1901 census will provide her resisdence at the time and if you are planning to visit there, if it still exists, it might be worth looking into it before you go.

Cheers

Hello and welcome Susan,

I agree with Rab on all the advice given.

Have you searched online at SP? You can view birth, marriage and death entries - details on the site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

I had a quick search if the IGI and I wonder if this could be your Kathrine Grieve's birth given the name of your gran. Anyway this can be confirmed if you search SP.

CATHERINE STEVENSON GRIEVE

Event(s):
Birth: 10 APR 1866 Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland

Parents:
Father: GEORGE GRIEVE
Mother: ELIZABETH MILLAR

You can get all sorts of helpful advice here - just ask! :D

Kind regards,
Annette M
