Carting contractors.....

Post by jean o » Thu Jul 20, 2006 9:48 pm

Hi

Does anyone know if there are records showing carting contractors in Caithness between 1800-1840?

Thanks

Hello Jean

I know that the Archive in Wick has trade directories for the town for around the 1830's as I found my gggrandfather and gguncles in business around that time. I don't know if they covered a wider area than that as we were doing a particular search and did not pay much attention to other entries.
My entries were for Tailoring and the other for Haberdashery so its likely that most other businesses were covered too.
There may be a separate book for Thurso.
I can't find the notes I made at the time so can't be more specific than that.
You should be able to Google for the address and the staff there would, I'm sure, be delighted to help if you e-mailed them.

Hi Jean,
If you give me the Family name, I will see if they get a mention in Angela Tucket's book, "The Scottish Carter"

Hi Davie

Many thanks for the offer

The name is James FERGUSON although on some documents its down as FARQUHARSON

He married in 1816 Wick, Caithness but have no idea where he originated from.

Sorry about the bum steer on this.

Apologies again
