Post by angel » Tue Mar 29, 2005 6:32 pm

Hi

Can someone do a 1851 census lookup for Coatbridge Glasgow. The family is John Gray either iron moulder or canal boatman maybe deceased. His wife is Francis [Fanny]age about 35 with 3 possible children.

Hi Heather,

Coatbridge is a town about 10 miles east of Glasgow City - both do come under Lanarkshire though.
Only mentioned in case of future searches and you're wondering why you can't find someone!
--
1851 cens 652 Ed 17 p 8 (Old Monkland)
Fanny GRAY 36
James 10
Isabella 8
John 6
Thomas 4
George 20 mths

[father John isn't with them - census page will need to be looked at to see if Fanny is a widow]
--
1861 cens 652-2 Ed 5 p 9
Frances GRAY 46
James 21
John 15
Thomas 13
George 11

[there is an 18yr old Isobel GRAY living very nearby]

If you are unable to look at the films then just say - i'll get the details at some point (i've a rather large backlog!).

Gray 1851 census

Post by angel » Wed Mar 30, 2005 1:13 pm

Hi Jack

I could hug you not only have you confirmed three names that I already had and gave me two new names.

The info that I had for George from LDS gave his birth as 1842 and that he had died in 1854 but you have found him alive and well in 1861.

I know when Fanny died at an old age she was a widow and now I have adate to work from when looking for his death. Thanks for the offer to look up th film but I have a LDS centre near me and I can go there and look at the film.

When I was a lot younger I worked at a factory in Coatbrige and all i can remember is sitting outside in our break soaking up the sun.

Many Thanks
Heather

Hi Jack

I would love it if you would post the census for me as I do not know when I will be able to go to look at them myself. And I agree it is mair exciting to look at them yourself but it is fitting the time. Ta for the offer.

Hi Heather,

Here they are - sadly Fanny was as a widow by 1851, and so no details for hubby John.

census

Hi Jack

Many thanks for all that info that you sent me it is a great help I am now able to narrow down the date of John's death which should make things easier when looking. Mind you I had to do a search to find out what a tambourer was that is a new occupation for the family that I had never heard of and all of your hard work is greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

John's death date

Post by Jack » Thu Mar 31, 2005 10:51 pm

Hi Heather,

It might be a wee bit difficult finding John's death date if it was in Old Monkland - as far as i'm aware there are no deaths recorded for that parish.
However if George was his son then father John was still living about Oct 1848 - i think!
--------
I use these for occupations - some duplication though.

ps - the 1842 birth (and death 1854) for George is an LDS submission, and as such should always be taken with a certain degree of caution until proved or otherwise.
Some are correct - but others, as it seems to be in this case, aren't.
