The illusive Barnabus .....
Can any one help My third great Grandfather was called Barnabus McGuire and I am struggling to find him. Has anyone ever found this name and any other variety's. I have noticed alot of Bernards and I am wondering if Barnabus in Ireland became Barny which sounded like Bernie or Bernard when they hit our shores.

What a great name, sounds like a character in Gangs of New York
Googling the name just bought up the one that left Ireland for the U.S - not yours i take it ? (also the same one connected to the messages on rootsweb, one world tree ect.)
Not the reply you wanted, sorry

Perhaps if you give us some more details of dates etc. we might be able to help.
I can imagine Baranbus/Barnabas becoming Barney. There is also the surname which could be spelled Maguire.
Have you checked out the 2 Barn* McGuire's in 1901 census?
Kind regards,

Think I have found him !!! The plot thickens, James McGuire My 2nd Great Grandfather's father was Barnabus. James was born around 1835. Low and behold I went crazy with wildcards and found the death of Barnabus McQuire in 1861 in the same street as James lived. The witness was his brother Hugh who on the 1861 census is the next door neighbour to James. The odds are so heavely stacked that this is my Barnabus but I just cant prove it as it says he was single and aged 40.
