Where would I find .....

Post by anner » Mon Jul 24, 2006 6:53 pm

I am driving to Scotland at the week end and hopefully staying for a week. :D Can some one tell me where I would find the Electorial registers for Glasgow, and If I were to visit the Mitchell Library a) would I have to book in advance, b) what would I be able to look up there. I am first going to Glasgow and then moving on to Perth, Dundee and the surrounding areas to there. Again are there any Family Centres for those areas. As it is my first trip up to Scotland any help would be great.
Really looking forward to my visit, and to taking my daughter back to her "roots".
Regards
Anner.

Hi Anner
Information about the Mitchell Library can be found here:
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/ ... tchell.htm
They do have electoral rolls for Glasgow as far as I remember. I don't think you need to book in advance. If you were planning on going to Park Circus you would need to book in advance though.

Perth - the AK Bell Library would be worth a visit I would think.

Dundee - the LDS Family History Centre has info for that area:
Bingham Terrace
Dundee, Tayside, Scotland
Phone: 01382-451247
Hours: T-Th 9am-3pm; W, Th 6pm-9pm.
but...Closed: Closed from 24 July; reopening 8 August 2006.

and there is Tayvalley FHS
http://www.tayvalleyfhs.org.uk/
& Dundee City Archives.
http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/archives/main.htm

Hope this is of some help
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley and thank you. I will be looking at these sites now, and am sure they will be of help.
I am not sure about Park Circus, as again I have seen it mentioned but not sure what it holds. Maybe that will on my next visit.
Regards
Anner

Dear Anner

Notice that you've got Ross on your list of most wanted! Can I ask which part of the country you are searching for them?? My own come from the area around the Forres/Elgin/Perth area. They are my maternal grandparents line. I only began looking for them in January this year.

Hi Liz, My Rosses are from all over the place starting with Kelso, Roxburgh, Perth, then Dundee. Some ended up in Glasgow as well. My own surname is Ross and it is from my paternal side. My lot married Math(i)e(w)son, Pirie, White and Gaffneys, along with Milne, Kennedy and Wilson, these are all the female lines. So as you can imagine quite common names but not too hard to trail.
Regards
Anne.

Hi Annie, I will certainly do that. I havent been to Scotland for about twenty years, and then it was only the West coast that I loved. So this time going on a trail that until now we havent known about as family secrets were kept about my father, so going to tread were he and our relies trod. :D

Anne.

Again thank you Lesley. I think I will have to arrange another trip to Glasgow and book into Park Circus. It is probably there I will find the man I am looking for. That is if the death index is after 1955. Thanks for those sites I have had a look and it may be that I can further the tree from them. Lots of branches on mine. but totally addicted.

Hi Anne,
The first available bookable space for Park Circus is about the 16th August (that's what was said today).
They really are busy.
But always worth phoning a good few times as there can be cancellations.
One space is always left for anyone who wants to turn up "on spec".
Bit risky though - not too long ago someone was there at 8am waiting for it...!
Jack
ps, no problem for most DCs after 1955 - they are nearly right up to the present day.
