Hi Jack and all!
I need your help again.
My John Duncan came to Australia in either late 1883, or early 1884.
His wife and children arrived in Sydney in April 1885.
I know John was still in Glasgow in August 1883 as I have a medallion that was given to him by his workmates ... dated August 1883.
I have searched the Immigration Deposit Journals here in Australia for him ... but I can't find him!
He must have been here prior to Feb 1884 as that is the date that he fills in the immigration deposit journal for the rest of the family to come to Australia. It gives his address in Scotland before leaving, and his Sydney address ... but not how or when he got here.
Are there any records over your way of passengers leaving for Australia?
Agnes and kids left from Plymouth on the SS Aberdeen, and I have found the shipping record for them.
All suggestions welcome!
Regards,
Carol Duncan

Hi Carole
I am still ( after 2 years ) trying to find where 'my' Thomas Elborn came into Australia,
I first see him registered as the father of my Great Grandmother. she was born 1858 in Victoria & can follow him after that, but can't actually tell when he arrived.
I see him at home living with his parents in the 1841 census & there is a Thomas Elborn living as a border in the 1851 census ( still to be confirmed if it's my Thomas though )
What are the immigration deposit journals??? I have searched film reels of immgration arrivals at my local family history society & searched online, but have never heard of the term "immigartion deposit journals"
My Elborns where from the Glasgow area.

Hi Kim,
From around 1828 - 1900, when you came to Australia you were usually 'sponsored', or you paid your own way - or prior to 1860 perhaps you were a convict!!!. As we were busily encouraging squillions of people to come work here ... people were sponsored by both governments and employers, then once they got here, they in turn sponsored their families.
Here's a good explanation and link:

I note that in the VIC records, a Frederick and Elizabeth ELBOURNE arrived in 1854. Have you checked them out?
In QLD, a Charles and Eliza ELBORNE arrived in 1854 (but I'd look closer at the VIC records first. It was common for people going into QLD to make an undertaking to stay and work for a while. But don't discount them.)
This website also lists ELBORNs of many spellings ... do check it.

Do you have his death certificate? They usually tell you how long someone had been resident in the state - giving you at least a rough idea of years you can search passenger lists for.
Do you think he was an adult or child when he arrived? Married? Did he bring children with him? Their own BDM certs could hold clues.
Do let me know how you go!
Regards,
Carol.

Hi Carole
Thanks so much for searching for me.
I had already checked out that other Elborn site. At this stage I can't see any connection to my Elborn line, I was hoping there would be, but not as yet.
Thomas & Margaret Fitzgerald supposedly married in Victoria in 1856, although no records have been uncovered for that event as yet. On Thomas's death certificate in 1916, it is full of "unknowns" & the informant was the matron at Albury hospital. Thomas had lost his wife & son in 1899 & his daughter Hannah, my g/grandmother was over in the Monaro district at the time of his death.
The Frederick Elborne is not connected to my line & the Elborns who arrived in Queensland originate from the Elborn site of Little Shelford.
I have tried all sorts of spelling Elb..on,orn,urn,orne,ourn,ourne, with a double "l" even tried Alborn variations as I thought this is how it may have seemed with a Scottish accent. I even tried El Born or L Born etc..
The people at my local Family History Society said a lot of people from Scotland paid their own way & their names may also be lost in the ships lists that only state crew & total number of passengers etc.
I know it's not that important, cos' I know he must have arrived here at some stage, but it's nice to have the date for a timeline etc.
Thanks again

Hi Kim,
It's only too true that lots of people came here only to be included as a number in a passenger list!
Sometimes I give my research up for a few months as I despair of finding new information ... but then I'll have a quick search after months of avoiding it all and find that a new researcher has popped up somewhere ... or a listing on a website is now coming up on searches.
Try a few different search engines, too. We are all too used to just using Google now ... but I have recently found a few new things using Yahoo search, Answers.com, etc.
And of course the folks in this forum fall over themselves to help!!! I have found their assistance to be absolutely invaluable when trying to research Scots from Australia!
Good luck!
