Looking for any info on James Vasey.....

Post by pinkKt » Tue Jul 25, 2006 11:12 am

James Vasey was born in 1857 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire but moved at some point to Sunderland. I'm making a visit to the area next year and am fairly sure that when the family moved to England at least one brother remained in Alloa. It would be interesting to know more - his siblings names and parents names. If anyone can help I'd be grateful, I am struggling with this research for my husbands family

Hi PinkKt
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

If you know his year of birth, have you tried a search for his birth on Scotlands People? That should give you his parents' names.
However, I'm not seeing anything obvious for him in a preliminary search of either SP or the LDS site - not for Clackmannan at any rate. Can I ask where you found his year and place of birth?

Also a search in the 1861 census would be worth a try - with any luck that would place your James with his parents and maybe some siblings too? But I'm not having much luck with that either just now for Clackmannan. Hmm... maybe its the weather!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi pinkKt

Any idea what occupation James dad might have had?? There are a few possible births scattered about in that time frame of a James V*s* but without something more to go on no way of knowing if one of them might be him. Unfortunately not a thing in Alloa! (No Lesley I don't think it's the weather  )

Best wishes
Jean

Hello all,

A quick check of the 1881 census reveals he was born in 1847 not '57.
Still doesn't help much mind you.

PinkKt,

Did you get his birth info from the census or have another source?
Have you looked at James's marriage cert to confirm his age?
I know I should know by now but do English marriage certs show parents' names?

Slightly far fetched but I wonder if he came from Alloway and not Alloa. Although there doesn't appear to be any Vassie families there are quite a few Vass Families in Ayrshire. One is a James Vass born in 1856.

Kind regards,
Annette M

James Edward Vasey

Thank you everyone for your replies. I found James Vasey in Sunderland on the 1881 Census, with his wife and family. It states that he was born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. He is my husband's great grandfather, but we knew very little about him, not even his name, the only thing we ever knew was that he was born in Alloa. I traced him through my husband's grandfather - but he is proving very elusive to find.He was born around 1847.

James Vasey

Post by pinkKt » Thu Jul 27, 2006 2:26 pm

Thank you Tracey

Yes that has to be the right one - James Edward did lose an arm at some point no idea how.

Does this look as if he was the only child born in Alloa? Seems his parents were born in England if I'm translating this right. Not very good at this I'm afraid - will need to study it a lot to get a grasp of the family tree!

Many many thanks for your help

Hi pinkKaty

Yes it seems he was the only one (known anyway) to have been born in Scotland. Makes you wonder why they were there :-k

Good luck
