John Lavery, b.1834, m. Ann Warnock.....

Post by alimail » Sun Jul 30, 2006 10:06 pm

I'm trying to find out what happened to John Lavery, born about 1834, married Ann Warnock in Paisley, 1856, 3 children, Mary, Margaret, David.
I've followed Mary's line, she was my gggrandmother, but can't find what happened to Margaret and David, or any record of John after his appearance as father on david's birth certificate, 1869.
If anyone has traced the Lavery line, or the Warnock line, I'd love to hear from you!
thanks
Ali

Hi Ali and I'll echo Tracey's welcome to you!

According to the IGI there were more than 3 children to your couple....

1. DAVID LAVERY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 22 AUG 1869 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

2. WILLIAM LAVERY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 18 DEC 1855 Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland

3. JOHN LAVERY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 24 SEP 1861 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

4. MARGARET LAVERY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 19 JAN 1860 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

5. WILLIAM LAVERY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 13 AUG 1863 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

6. THOMAS LAVERY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 22 FEB 1866 Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

And that list doesn't even include your Mary!

I'm assuming you've tracked down the death of Ann using the maiden name and married name death search on ScotlandsPeople website. Beccause this states that she was married at the time of her demise then you have to assume John was still living. Have you tried to locate the children on the 1881 census?? I'd look for you but I'm temporarily census less :(

Perhaps John abandoned the family and Ann's parents were involved in raising the children?? Might be worth tracking down their deaths or alternatively try to find them in 1881.

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Ali,

Hopefully all will be revealed in Anne's poorhouse application if it has survived.
As David said in your other post they can be a mine of information.

Here is the first page of one of mine - http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-69

Kind regards,

I can't believe how helpful you people out there have been!!!
I found the "missing" children, John and Thomas. They didn't appear on the censuses as they died, both aged 2, in 1863 and 1868. The youngest son, David, died aged 10, 1880, in East Park Cottage Home, 8 years after his Mum died, poor wee soul.
I still can't find ANY reference to John, the father, after 1869. He seems to have disappeared until he crops up on Mary's wedding certificate.
Maybe he went abroad.....or prison....any further suggestions on tracking him down welcome. His wife obviously wanted shot of him as she referred to herself as a widow in the 1871 census.
Maybe he's my very own Black Sheep....

Hi folks,
This 1833 birth is an LDS Submission - and the birth year is near enough right.
No guarantee he's the correct John - though worth checking out.
Interestingly there is a death date - but doesn't say if it's in Scotland....

JOHN LAVERY Birth: 1833 Linwood, Renfrew, Scotland
Death: 30 OCT 1913
Parents: Father: WILLIAM LAVERY Mother: MARGARET.
[LDS submission]
--
JOHN LAVERY
ANN WARNOCK
Marriage: 29 DEC 1854 Middle Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
Husband Age at Marriage: 21
Wife Age at Marriage: 20

Ali, i presume this is your GG-Gmother;
MARY LAVEY - Birth: 14 FEB 1858 Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland
--
The 1861 census says John 27 was born "Linwood, Kilbarchan",
and wife Ann 28 was born "Glasgow, LKS".
But wee William's 1855 BC should also say where for both.

I obviously couldn't find John because the old rascal lived far longer than I imagined he would, to 80 years old, and died only 3 years before my dad was born!!! Once I've topped up my credits on Scotlandspeople, I'll find out where he was in the 1901 census.
Grovelling grateful thanks to Jack in Paisley for finding him for me. I'll also check out if he's the same fella who ended up in Lancashire with a new wife and 3 more kids...thanks to Tracey for that piece of info.
Absentee fathers..obviously not a new phenomenon!

Hi Ali,
If Tracey has found your John in Lancashire 1901, then he shouldn't also be in Scotland 1901....
And if he is in Lancashire, then it's a fair chance that he could've died in England.
(i'm wondering why the submitter doesn't mention the mother's surname)
But certainly no harm in seeing if there is a 1913 Scottish DC.
