John Smith , the tailor.....

Post by donna petrie » Tue Aug 01, 2006 12:05 am

HI: Am seeking information on John Smith born around 1827 in Roxburgh. Married to Jane Mains? ( something like that). children include William, Robert S. Christina, John, Janet. Boys born in England. On 1851 census, in Edinburgh. On 1861 census wife listed as Margaret. It may be he re-married . the reason I think this is because after Janet there are no more children and I know Jane was dead by 1868 when daughter Christina married- if this is the correct family. Can anyone help with John or Jane? Thank you. Donna

Hello Donna,

Not quite sure what you are looking for and you probably have this but could this be John in 1841? From FREECEN -

Piece: SCT1841/803 Place: Roxburgh-Roxburghshire Enumeration District: 9
Civil Parish: Roxburgh Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 10 Page: 5
Address: Heiton

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
SMITH Robert M 60 Carrier England
SMITH Betty F 55 Roxburghshire
SMITH Robert M 20 Roxburghshire
SMITH John M 15 Roxburghshire
SMITH Margaret F 65 Independent England

There is a Robert Smith born around the right time and place on the IGI mother's name Betty Bell.
I had a wee search for what I think may be Betty's death on SP.
There is an Elizabeth Bell/Smith death in 1855 which could be worth a look.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hello Annette: I 'm not quite sure either. I had given up on the Smiths due to common name , cost factor etc and also couldn't make out Jane's last name on marriage and death certs of daughter Christina. However they remain my big mystery so can't resist.

Thank you for the information - I didn't have it. I think my 1851/61 census data is correct and I wll input your data with a firm ? Donna

Hi Donna

How about posting the certificate in the Gallery so other sharp eyes can look at it?
We have rarely been completely stumped by a document and some have led to very satisfying new discoveries.

We enjoy the challenge too! :D :D

Hi Russell: I will post it shortly. what I would really like is for a descendant of one of Christina's siblings to be searching also - and have all the answers!! Donna

Hi Donna

I agree with LesleyB - Armour

Christina had been in Barnhill for some time as this was given as her usual address.

Don't know if this really helps. Perhaps you should put up what you have on the family.there may be someone out there who'll say 'They're in MY tree'

HI: Sorry I accidentally posted the image from Christina's death cert showing that mum's last name was different than on Christina's marriage cert. I posted the marriage one in the gallery. Donna

And here it is:

Hi Donna
Looks like Main or Mains to me...? Its not so easy with only a small sample of handwriting - best if possible to post the whole image in original tiff format.

Best wishes
Lesley

I'm with you Lesley, but could it also be Maine?
