Looking For John Ashcroft.....
Looking for John Ashcroft born ABT 1815. Do not know what county or parish. His wife's name was possibly Margaret. He had a daughter named Agnes. He moved to Canada in 1841. Wish I could be of more help, but that is all I have at this time.

Hi there
This one is difficult
. Do you know for a fact that John and Margaret married in Scotland before emigrating? Do you know when or where Agnes was born? Do you know of other children born to them.....full names? If he truly left Scotland in 1841 and this was prior to the census that year then you are really out of luck. I looked and did not see any John Ashcroft's within a reasonable age range on the 1841 census. There are two in the Glasgow general area but both are only 15 years of age so not likely! The IGI does not show any births to John Ashcroft and Margaret in Scotland. The IGI does show one birth of a John Ashcroft in 1819......I wonder if you've considered this as a possible????

It might be possible to try and locate this John and his parents on future census return just to see if they remain in Scotland. If not...well....he looks even better. If there were any occurences of the name Buchanan in your family line say as a middle name? then this might be an even stronger contender!
That's all I have for suggestions at the moment!
Best wishes
Jean

I was just going to post the IGI information, but Jean beat me to it
There is also another one born in 1825, but that is probably too far out age-wise. I note that Scotland's People has three results between 1810 and 1820, but I don't have any credits to check what they are.
Do you have all his records from Canada?
Best of luck,
Sarah

I have the Obit for Agnes Ashcroft Hotson. It says that she was born in Scotland, 12 Aug 1840. At the age of of one year she came with her parents to Port Hope, Canada ( that would be 1841) She married William in 1855 in Port Hope.
Don't know if Agnes had any brothers or sisters
I have the death Certificate for Agnes, that states her father's name as John Ashcroft born in Scotland; no mother's name given
Found Margaret living with William and Agnes Hotson in the 1880 census for Powhattan, Brown, Kansas . They listed her as William's sister-in-law, but the age difference, to me is to great. Agnes age 40 and Margaret is 62. Also found her still living with William and Agnes in 1885 Ag census age 65.
John Ascroft showed up in the 1871 census :
Egremont Twp, Grey South, Onitaro., Canada.
Age 56, Head of Household.
Ethnic Origin: Scottish.
Religion: Church of Scotland, Kirk, Scotch Presbyterian.
Occupation: Farmer
