Hi Katie

If i have the right couple the 1841 census puts his birth year at 1796. Putting this information on familysearch allowing + or - 5 years brings back 3 possibilities in Berwick - Swinton, Dunns and Chirnside. Have you seen these ?

Tracey
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Have you looked for death register entries on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ?

Best technique is to use the cross-check surname search to look for the death of the wife and see if she is described as "married to" or a "widow of".

Except in this case that doesn't give a hit, but if you look for the death of an Elspeth CO*BURN, you'll find one matching on age, place, and name of husband - Thomas is shown as a Head Forrester, - except, unfortunately, the informant doesn't know the names of his grandparents  , but then from her death register entry and the census info, you know where she was born.

Search now the period of 1855 to that year for the death of Thomas ....... on an initial search I can't see one........ so then have a look in the 1861 census, and see if Thomas is there (search for Elsp[e/i]t[h]), and if she's a widow, then in 1851. Al this will provide a tighter range of years in which to search in other records, e.g. MIs.

It looks like you are fortunate since the family appear consistently in Largo in this period, so you have a clear target for MIs, - also the OPR for Largo has death records for the period in question which might also help, - these have been published by Fife FHS on a CD.

You don't say if you've had a look in IGI.........

I HAVE LOOKED ON IGI, EVEN PAID TO VIEW HIS WILL BUT NO CLUES TO WHO HIS PARENTS WERE. THE REASON I FOUND OUT HE WAS BORN IN BERWICKSHIRE PRESTON WAS FROM THE 1851 CENSUS. THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP. KATIE

Katie

You couldn't have found this out from the 1841 census, as that only gave the answer "Y(es)" or "N(o)"; or "E(ngland)", "I(reland)", or "F(oreign)" to the question "Born in the County?".

I suspect that you established this via the 1851 census, rather than 1841.

Rightly or wrongly Ancestry DOES put POB on the 1841 census mostly POB is in the same place as the census was taken i suppose because of the layout of the results they have to put this but its when this happens...........

Example
William Donaldson abt 1828 Angus, Scotland Auchterhouse Angus 273
William Donaldson abt 1763 Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Balmaclellan Kirkcudbrightshire 856
William Donaldson abt 1832 Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Balmaclellan Kirkcudbrightshire 856
William Donaldson abt 1826 Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Balmaghie Kirkcudbrightshire 857A
William Donaldson abt 1826 Scotland Banff Banffshire 147
William Donaldson abt 1816 Ireland Barony Lanarkshire 622
William Donaldson abt 1789 Lanarkshire, Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622
William Donaldson abt 1819 Lanarkshire, Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622
William Donaldson abt 1801 Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622
William Donaldson abt 1826 Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Hi Tracey
I can only think that Ancestry must have taken the "in county=yes" column to generate these birthplaces. I'd be interested to know what Ancestry does when the answer was "outside county", which would seem to have been the case for Thomas Cockburn in 1841 - he was in Fife in 1841 but was not born there it would seem.

Either that or the placename given just indicates the census place, not the birthplace.

Best wishes
Lesley
