Covenanters/Research.....

Post by Rodeo » Mon Aug 07, 2006 12:42 pm

Has anyone undertaken any research about covenanters in Glassford (or Lanarkshire generally)?

Apart from the standard historical texts, what current genealogical research is available? Is there an historical society consecrated to the study of covenanters in Lanarkshire?

I am specifically interested in Gavin Paterson of Nethershields and the process against him for treason for participating in the 1679 rebellion.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Hi Rodeo,
There are plenty of Covenanting sites on the Net.
"Covenanting/Covenanters Scotland" will get you a few results.
I have several tomes on them myself.
The Patersons are supposed to have fought at Drumclog and were members of the Cameronians and The Scottish Rifles.
I have never come across Gavin Paterson before and would be interested in where you got the information.
My Patersons originated in the Monklands district and the Gavin name is very popular in my family today.
Seven at the last count.
My Father was Gavin Paterson McNaughtan, called after his grandfather.
I don't know where you are based, but Jimmy Dickson, in Kilsyth is the man you should speak to.

Covenanters/Gavin Paterson

Post by Rodeo » Fri Aug 11, 2006 12:21 am

Hi Davie

Yes, my Patersons fought at Drumclog and Bothwell Brig. And, yes, there is a long tradition among my Paterson forebears of service in the Cameronians, including my great great Uncle, Gavin Paterson, a well-known Hamilton architect who was a Lt.-Colonel in the 6th (Cameronians) Scottish Rifles. I, too, am descended from a long line of Gavin Patersons.

The Gavin Paterson of Nethershields to whom I refer is a forebear. There is a commentary about the pursuit of him by Lord Glassford and process against him for treason (as well as the heavy fine he was compelled to pay 'for his wife refusing to hear the curate') in the Statistical Accounts of Scotland (Parish of Glassford 1834-45) taken from the Glassford kirk sessions.

Perhaps we should compare notes about our Gavin Patersons (if you would like to send me a private message).

I am based in Sydney, Australia. Who is this Jimmy Dickson of Kilsyth you mention and do you have an email address you could pass on to me?

Thanks so much for your help, Davie.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Greetin's Rodeo,
I appear to be banned from sending PM's on here.
Though I don't know why.
Must have offended someone, but cannot recall ever sending one before.
That was good info from The Statistical accounts, will see if I can come up with anything else.
I have over 100 tomes on the Church in Scotland, probably 20 or so on the Covenanters.
Jimmy Dickson has the largest collection of books on religion in Scotland.
The last time I was through in Kilsyth, he was not on E-mail, but I'll get back to you on that.
My e-mail is now

If you want to get in touch

Did you remember to put a subject in for your PM - it won't send without one. I've been stopped in my tracks a few times forgetting to do that!

Best wishes

Just checked your profile & for some reason your PMs were set to off. Probably happened in error - It is easy to do with an stray click at some point when you were there. I've put it back on - should be no problems now.

Best wishes
Lesley
