Obit 1885 Glasgow?.....

Post by Dubbleu » Wed Aug 09, 2006 2:23 pm

Hi
I am looking for further information about my g-g-g-g grandfather JOHN SPENCER who died 28 January 1885, 57 Glenforth (? sp) St., Glasgow, district of Camlachie. (uncertain born Ireland about 1810) He was possibly quite prominent with the Freemasons during his time and I'm wondering if there would be an obituary. Does anyone have access to or know if there would be a local newspaper for that time to do a lookup?

With gratitude,
Wendy

Up until recently the Gand Lodge in Scotland were offering to check their records, - Google gives the following, -

Genealogy Enquiries - Searching Masonic Membership Records. The Grand Lodge of Scotland will search the membership record to try and trace your Masonic ancestors and relatives.

...but that address is currently giving a "page cannot be found error".

They seem to be updating the site:

I'm not really up on Freemasons - but is it a Masonic thing to spell Kalendar like that, or are they as prone to typos as the next man?

Best wishes

Thanks. I did contact The Grand Lodge last year by post and I received a very nice reply. The Secretary explained to me that he would be happy to look up my ancestor but their records are not indexed and for him to do a lookup he would need to know the lodge number of which my ancestor was a member. Unfortunately I don't know that detail, so I am still at a dead end. I also did email a number of lodges last year with a general inquiry but most did not respond. I was hoping that an obituary in the newspaper might give me the necessary details to write to the Grand Lodge again and/or possibly some other clues to his origins.

Thanks,
Wendy

hi Wendy
In that case perhpas the Mitchell Library would be the place to try for newspapers & maybe an obit? (see Libraries link at top of page, then Glasgow City Council)

Best wishes

Understood.

That's maybe why the web page is no longer available, as I don't recall it being made obvious that the lodge number was required...........
