Do you know Margery's surname?
The closest match I could find was on 2nd November 1775 a John Lovie married a Marjy Hackett in Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire. The date doesn't seem to fit and although it's not the correct location it is close.

I know what you mean. Those are the problems I've run into on a number of occassions once you move back out of the statutory record period. To be honest I can't think of anything that would confirm Margery's maiden name. That's why I am surprised so many people trace their family line back through this period.
Hopefully someone else might be able to provide a new line of enquiry.

Hi Michelle and Rab
We were able to go back another generation by looking at the LDS films of the OPR. By looking at births and Marriages (well - posting Banns) then following up the witnesses we were able to identify other marriages into other family lines. They brought us back to the original couple and parish burial records. Slow and tedious but eminently satisfying to detour into the extended families to build a picture. It might only work in smaller communities though where traditional naming patterns were followed and the pool of surnames was smaller.

Hi Michelle
In one family we had to brothers whose children were born in the same year, same gender up to the 8th child when they stopped, thank goodness.
The only clues we had were tiny hints in some OPR Birth entries for where they lived. None of the steadings still exist so old maps were pored over till we found them. That won't work in some of the Highland areas because maps then were not detailed enough.
Sometimes a grandchild would be interred alongside grandparents and it would probably be his/her parents who erected the commemorative stone so the dates for the early occupants can be a year or two out.
Some of the stones for the late 1600's have only initials on them which makes it almost impossible unless there are other church records or Mortcloth records left.
It may take a long time but it's surprising what you can still discover.
