WALKER/MORTON.....

Post by Grace Carrick » Sun Aug 27, 2006 2:41 pm

Have just found one of my Mortons and her marriage.

JANET MORTON, age 18, married 3rd July 1883 Port Glasgow, to WILLIAM WALKER, age 23. Occ. Carter. Son of William Walker, Ploughman and Elizabeth Craig.
Wm Walker snr. and Eliz. Craig were married on 27th November, 1857 in Paisley Abbey.
Unfortunately the following two census have numerous Janet and William Walkers listed, many in Glasgow.
Would like to hear from anyone connected to the above.

This looks like the family in 1881 - I know it has the mother as C. Walker but the children all fit with the IGI as children of William Walker and Elizabeth Craig. Except there isn't a William :?

Hi Annette and Grace,

Wonder if there was some confusion on the 1883 MC?
It being actually John who married Janet Morton, but he was somehow given his father's name of William.
The 1881 census you found Annette has a John with the occupation of carter, and he's near enough the right age.
Or John decided to change his name to William?

What were the names of William Walker & Elizabeth Craig's children in the 1871 census?

Grace, do you have any children for William Walker & Janet Morton?
The address on any BCs around 1891 & 1901 might help pinpoint where the family were in those years.

Jack

ps later, looks like i could be well off the mark - this from the 1861 name index.
Seems there IS a William born abt 1860...?
(John is as born 15 Dec 1861...after the census was taken)
Something "funny" going on! i think the 1871 census needs looked at.

1861 census 626-2 Ed 4 p 12 (Cadder)
William WALKER, 28, b New Monkland
Elizabeth WALKER, 23, b Houston, RFW
Elizabeth WALKER, 3, b Paisley, RFW
William WALKER, abt 1, b Cadder, LKS
==
pps even later, nothing "funny" going on...i was wrong...again!
There IS a William WALKER, but for some reason he's missing from the IGI.

BC 1859. 626-2. 81. Cadder East.
William WALKER, born 4 AUG 1859 at Gartloch.
Parents - William WALKER, farmer, & Elizabeth CRAIG.

The 1871 Rutherglen census has an 11yr old William born Calder.

Hi there Annette and Jack,
Thanks for your replies. I did try to go through the 1891 and 1901 census, hoping to get a clue, but there doesn't seem to be any listed for Greenock, which means they must have been living elsewhere and as there are more than a few, just in Glasgow, in different areas, it would cost a small fortune to download the certificates to find out. I did however find a William Walker in the 1901 census for Kilmacolm, and bearing in mind the connection to the Marshalls of Kilmacolm, he may have been visiting there, but no Janet at Kilmacolm at this date???It would appear from the LDS site that Williams father also William married Elizabeth Craig on 27/11/1857 at Paisley Abbey, but I don't know where they were living at when their son married Janet Morton. Does anyone know where Laigh Tollhouse was in Greenock? that seems to be where both William and Janet were residing at and where they were married??? Again because of the numbers of Walkers on the official records, births are another question mark, and so at this time I don't know who their children were, I may have to try pot luck and hope I press on the right ones!!!! Thanks anyway for your help, I'll take a note of the census info for Williams possible father, and keep searching.

Hi Grace,
I notice you're in Lanarkshire, and if you can manage, it might be well worth visiting Park Circus.
(they now have the 1841 to 1901 censuses)

The Glasgow & West of Scotland FHS have (amongst much more) at their Partick premises.
http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/

1891 Scottish Census name index on fiche.
1901 Scottish Census name index searchable (with *wildcards*) on computer.
--
The Mitchell Library also has the 1891 fiche index, but alas not the 1901 index.
But they do have many Census Street Indexes.

I've always found the staff or volunteers at all three places very friendly and helpful.

Hi Jack,
Thanks for that info. Unfortunately I live in South Lanarkshire about 60 miles away from Glasgow, and am unable to get there at this time, but I shall keep the info you have given and when I eventually manage to travel I will know where to go. Thanks again for your help.
