alexander williamson.....

Hi Everyone
Getting myself a bit muddled here and would appriciate some advice and or second opinions.
I have Alexander Williamson born 23/09/1804 Polmont. He definately married Helen Spence, she was born 14/06/1818 Polmont and they married 04/02/1842 Polmont.
In the 1851 census, I have Alex aged 47, Helen aged 32, children John 10, Thomas 8, Helen 7 and Alex 5.
Helen Spence died around 1851/53 but I havent been able to find out when. By the 1861 census Alexander appears to have remarried. This is not a problem I have even found a grave for the new wife and Alex.
She was Elizabeth Steven and on the OPR they married 27/03/1853 Polmont so this all makes sense. Then the 1861 census looks fine too
I have Alex 56, Elizabeth 49, Thomas 18, Helen 17, and Alexander 14. Elizabeth died 1874 and Alex was the death informant. So far this seemed straight forward.
BUT! then I got Alex's death cert! He died 1881 but it lists his wife as Helen Spence ONLY....What happened to Elizabeth? or am I confusing two families with same ages etc? As Elizabeth only died 7 years prior and the kids werent young at the time of her death, I cant understand why she wouldnt be on the cert. It was Alex and Helens son Thomas who signed it.
Any suggestions on how I can prove or disprove? Getting in a right tizz here
Lainey
PS Should mention Alex is listed throughout as a Shoemaker, so the occupation never varied to make me wonder.
searching for Jacks, Williamsons, Maxwells, Wardlaws, Hardies, Bennies, Kays, Bruce, Sneddon, Dougall and Galloway all mainly Polmont and Muiravonside areas - basically all families from Polmont!!

Hi Lainey

Did Alexander and Elizabeth have any children?

Perhaps the children from the first marriage didn't get on with their step mother and decided to leave her off the certificate!

Hi Jean
I dont think so. I reckon that Elizabeth would be aged about 42 by the time they married. I havent found any and I was assuming that she was a bit past it by the time they got together! There is nothing on the grave to suggest differently either. By the time of the 1871 census it was Alex and Elizabeth with the dau Helen who was by then a widow with a child. No mention of any other younger ones by then.
