Scottish naming pattern.....

Post by julie d » Sat Sep 02, 2006 11:51 pm

How reliable do you think this is, I have hit a brick wall with James Donaldson and Janet Marshall( Marshal). So I have been messing around on SP, I looked up births for Janet and got 2 who were born in Bathgate, where all the children were born (coincedence?) when I looked at the parents of Janet the names fit in with the naming pattern ie: 2nd son named for mothers father, 1st daughter named for mothers mother. I would love this to be my Janet Marshall, but just don't know. Thanks Julie.

Hi Julie
Some families did seem to stick to the naming pattern, others didn't! I reckon if the names for this couple look right, then they are certainly strong contenders - if it were me, I'd now be trying to find out all I could about that couple, starting with checking the OPRs to see if any extra wee bits of info were given, like an occupation, or a place where they stayed. I'd also check on SP to see if there was a will - to see the list of results (if any) is free.

I'm not sure when your Janet was around - I take it she died before 1855, so no chance of finding a death?

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley, they must have been born around 1765-1780, I have found a lot of births for James but have no idea where he was born, If Janet was born in Bathgate I am assuming he probably came from out of the area to settle there with her.I will have a look at SP and OPRs. Julie.
