I think Sarahs are sometimes called Sally.

I would agree to that as there are several in my family named SARAH but always called SALLY.

Mary

Spot on !!

Leslie Alan Dunkling's "Scottish Christian Names" lists Sally as originally a pet form of Sarah, but then used independently since the 18th C.

Another diminutive of Sarah is Sadie. Sara was also used as a spelling, and Sarah was often used as a subsitute for the Gaelic Mór(ag).

Sarah might be thought to be non-Scottish but was ranked 12th in Scotland in 1858, 12th in 1935, before falling to 54th in 1958.

hi derek
I'm a Sally - and that's what it says on my birth certificate . But I too was always told it was usually "short" for Sarah . I do know that I hated my name when I was little - it was not a common name in the areas of Scotland where I lived - I dreamed of being a Jean or a Margaret ...
