ALLISON MUIR & WARES (Denoon Morrison Renwick Mitchell).

Post by b1b2j3 » Mon Sep 04, 2006 10:36 am

My first post, hope I don't bore you all with below. I work primarily on my own from Australia. I would like to know more about my GGrandMother and her Family of MUIR, WARES & McARTHUR. .

I'll leave the second Family marriages of Denoon, Morrison & Renwick for now. I have spent a lot of SP points finding out & am quite ready to share.

Marion Allison nee: Muir
McArthur. Her daughter Allison Muir nee: Mcarthur BANNATYNE is my Mothers Mother. What I have found out is that:

Marion was born 24th September, 1864. Address- 53 1/2 Stirling St, Milton, Glasgow. Parents listed as William Muir, Flesher Journeyman and Margaret nee: Wares. Their marriage listed as 20th October, 1863, Calton District, Glasgow. And died- Royal Infirmary Glasgow. 08.09.1934. Wife of Benjamin Denoon, Joiner. Widow of Robert McArthur, Plumber. Parents listed as William Muir (dec), Butcher and Margaret (dec) nee: Wares. Death at 69. Death cause Paralytic strangulated hernia and gangrenous hernia.

Marions parents, William MUIR and Margaret nee: Wares Muir, were married- 20.10.1863. At # & South St, South of St Mary's St Glasgow. after Banns and according to the forms. The United Presbyterian Church. William Muir. Bachelor (26). Occupation- Flesher. Glasgow resident of 91 Tallowgate or Galloway (?) and George St. Parents- James Muir. Occupation- English Teacher. And Mary nee: Fraser (dec).Witness Robert Campbell. Margaret Wares-Occupation- Sales woman in Bakers shop. (17rs). Resident of Number 8 South & Grange St Glasgow. Parents James Wares. Occupation Baker (dec) and Mary nee: Simpson. (deceased). Witness- Peter Ghilchrist and James Muir. Margarets parents may not have been James & Mary. But Marion nee: Allison & David Wares. .

On death- Death Margaret Wares Muir- GROS-644/021247. Death: 11.06.1869. 124 Duke St, Glasgow. (22). Parents listed as David Wares, Grocer , (dec) and Marion nee: Allison (dec). Cause of death- Acute bronchitis. Married to William Muir, Flesher.

124 Duke Street comes up as the constant to bind the Muir Family location & the birth of all Wares-Muir children via Margaret & William.

All Wares
are from Canisbay Caithness. All Muir are from Greenock, Milton & Mearns Renfrew. All Allison family are from 'Glasgow'. And Fraser from the Glasgow area. (phew). All Renwicks are Glasgow, All Denoons are Ross & Cromarty & all Morrisons are also Glasgow.

Jumping ahead again....In all William & Margaret had Margaret Wares Muir (1867) and Mary Fraser Muir (died soon after birth 1869). Margaret Wares Muir went onto marry Thomas Mitchell (& I think ended up in Cook, Illinois, USA.) As well as Marion Allison.

What I'd appreciate is

1. some help in confirming the David & Marion // or James & Mary as Margaret nee: WARES parents. It's okay if they are kin. David seems to have died soon after his wife (& new born female).

Wares David 01/08/1860 grocer, McAlpine Street in Glasgow, spouse of Marion Alison or Wares Trust Disposition and Settlement Glasgow Sheriff Court Wills SC36/51/40 1. (7 pages). Wares David 01/08/1860 grocer in McAlpine Street, Glasgow Inventory Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories SC36/48/46. Date of death- 04.05.1860.

2. Contact with any Muir, Wares, Fraser, Allison, ( Morrison - William Muirs second wife Catherine, Catherine Morrisons second husband David Renwick & Marion Allison Muirs second husband Benjamin Denoon).

I have a few holes in my research but plenty of good solid evidence. Given its taken me 3 years to straighten my Bute > Stirling . Glasgow Bannatynes out, I guess its okay. More on them soooon. And thank you...Bron

Post by b1b2j3 » Tue Sep 05, 2006 11:14 pm

Thank you. There is my GrandMother (x2) & William Morrison Muir. Catherine using her maiden name. I am so glad to find Cath as well. Poor bugga...in 1876 William Muir, the flesher killed another inmate of Gartnavel Asylum. He was a private patient admitted a year before by James Muir (his Father, -teacher). William was suffering delusions etc & seemed to have settled down. He murdered Walter Paterson (possibly a cousin) & was put to trial. Unfortunately he died by throwing himself against a wall (!!). A very kind person from Glasgow Health sent me the details.

I will check later as to what certs I have. But thank you very much for your help. It is so nice to know Catherine survived those years & did go onto re-marry.

Thank you again WOW !!...and I see Margaret Wares Muir there as well..."Maggie". This makes things a little easier to go find what happened to Williams son William Morrison Muir & Catherine's next children Robert Morrison Renwick born 1881. Was a busy year for Cath hey ! A working butcher, a marriage and a birth in one year or so. Ans to find Margaret as a 'Maggie' is just great.

Hello b1b2j3
I write from Scotland. I have just trawled through your old research regarding William Muir b 1846, whilst researching my family tree. William Muir and Margaret Wares are my great-great grandparents. I thought you may like to receive the following information in case you haven't already got it. I thought you might like to know what became of Marion Allison Muir's sister. You said that you thought William and Margaret's daughter Margaret Wares Muir married Thomas Mitchell and then ended up in Cook, Illinois. They didn't in fact. They had three children in Glasgow, Thomas Mitchell, Evelyne Mitchell and John Mitchell (who is my grandfather). When my grandfather was two years old his father died in Smithston Asylum in Gourock although his address was in Rutherglen, and that left Margaret Wares Muir widowed at the age of 24. She went on to remarry George Hamilton and had more children. She lived until 1961and died in Largs.

I vaguely remember Margaret Wares Muir when I met her in Largs when I was a child, shortly before she died. I didn't realise until last week what a number of shocks she must have had in her life. She lost her mother when she was very young, her father when she was about eleven through such scary circumstances, and her husband when she was twenty-four. I remember she had fingers missing and my Dad told me she had had an accident in the butcher shop. She did however have a happy marriage and more children with her second husband George Hamilton.
Did you ever solve the mix of parents re James Wares and Mary Simpson or Marion Allison and David Wares?
I have managed to get a copy of the case notes on William. What a sad thing to happen to him and of course to his victim. I also have no idea why Thomas Mitchell ended up in Smithstoun asylum in Greenock so if you know please pass on the information.
Happy hunting,
mitchell11

Hello mitchell11 and welcome to [talkingscot]

Although the initial post was made over 4 years ago, I see that Bron (b1b2j3) was last on the forum in April of this year, so there is a good chance she will see your post. Sounds like you two have a lot of information to share!

All the best,
Sarah
