Hi
Once again I am needing a census lookup but for the Renfrew area. My 2 x great grandmother married Andrew Calderwood Swan and the only date that I can find for her birth is the 14 July 1847 [ a 100 exactly before my husband was born] and that was off the LDS. She was born Dalmarnock Neilson Renfrew her parents are John Tenpleton a Handloom Weaver and Janet Anderson I do not know if she had any siblings.
Many Thanks
Heather

You forgot to give us her name Heather !
but after looking up Andrew Swan's marriage I assume you mean
Janet Templeton?
I had a quick look at the IGI:
There's a submitted entry:
JANET TEMPLETON
Parents:
Father: JOHN TEMPLETON
Mother: JANET ANDERSON
Marriages:
Spouse: ANDREW CALDERWOOD SWAN
Marriage: 21 DEC 1867 13 Amfield Place,Duke St, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Husband Age at Marriage: 21
Wife Age at Marriage: 19
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Messages: Form submitted by a member of the LDS Church.
That doesn't quite add up to the extracted entry:
JANET TEMPLETON
Marriages:
Spouse: ANDREW CALDERWOOD SWAN
Marriage: 31 DEC 1866 High Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Messages:
Extracted marriage record
JANET TEMPLETON
Event(s):
Birth: 14 JUL 1847
Christening: 20 JAN 1848 Neilston, Renfrew, Scotland
Parents:
Father: JOHN TEMPLETON
Mother: JANET ANDERSON
Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record
I don't know where you got the Dalmarnock, that would be in the East End of Glasgow, I can't think of anywhere in the Neilston area with that name [ unless it was a farm?].
Doing a parent search shows another 2 submitted entries for a JANE born on the 14 July 1847 at Dalmarnock Renfrewshire. treat with caution

Opps sorry got carried away...lol
Andrew Calderwood Swan's marriage on the IGI is right for 31 december 1867I have a printoff from SP. Sometimes the banns a put in a year before and this is how we have two dates.
I am having trouble with his wifes birth and anything to do with her parents. I need info on Janet Templeton and her parents John Templeton Handloom Weaver and Janet Anderson.
She is down on her marriage cert as Janet and died in 1873 after the birth of a daughter who was named after her.
As the extracts both say Neilson Renfrew I would hope that there was a grain of truth there.

Janet Templeton
Hi Heather,
There is only 1 Janet TEMPLETON in ALL Renfrewshire in 1851 - at Neilston with an ANDERSON family....
--
1851 census. Neilston Village.
Agnes ANDERSON, 53
Thomas ANDERSON, 25
Agnes ANDERSON, 18
Janet ANDERSON, 15
Janet TEMPLETON, 3
--
No mention of John & Janet TEMPLETON at all, and the above Janet ANDERSON at 15yrs does appear on the young side to be the mother.
The census should at least show the relationship to Agnes.
If you get Andrew & Janet on the 1871 census it should have Janet's birthplace - just hope it's right (can't see her in Glasgow 1861).

Hi Jack
I will look for them in the 1871 census when I have some credits. Janet may have been with her parents. I can't make out her occupation it look like collar---- I think it is all one word not sure. She may have been living on her own or boarding.

Hi Heather,
If you have the birth addresses of these 2 children i could check the 1871 census street index at a future time.
Not too sure when though - i've got a fair bit of unfinished family work i'd like to complete.
MARY CRAWFORD SWAN - Birth: 14 MAR 1869 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark
AMELIA WALKER SWAN - Birth: 17 JUN 1871 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark

This won't help much but the relationship is shown as lodger.

Hi Everybody
Many thanks for everybodys help it is much appreciated.
Andrew Calderwood Swan married Janet Templeton at 13 Amfield Place, Duke Street Glasgow so the children could have been born there. In the 1881 census they stayed at 160 Saltmarket Glasgow but Janet had died by this time. I have names for children of the IGI and there is another Amelia Walker Swan b. 4 April 1867 Huchesontown Glasgow she must have died and they named another child with the same name and the family have moved to Tradeson. Amelia Walker was Andrew's stepmother.
The Janet Templeton that is a lodger on census night would be about the right age but why a child is a lodger I do not know.
John Templeton b. 1812 could be a possibilty which I will have to take note of just in case

Thanks Annette,
I don't know how often i've forgotten that the Barrhead / Neilston 1851 census is online!
--
Heather, as the children were born in Tradeston the family would be more likely to be there in 1871.
An Andrew SWAN of the right age will be easily found.
MARY CRAWFORD SWAN - Birth: 14 MAR 1869 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
AMELIA WALKER SWAN - Birth: 17 JUN 1871 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Both Duke Street & the Saltmarket are north of the River Clyde - Tradeston is on the south, so they wouldn't have been born at either of those addresses.
--
Sometimes even if related a person is (unfortunately) listed as a lodger. Maybe it's just coincidence that she is with an Anderson family - seems doubtful though, and time may tell if there is a connection somewhere.
I can't see the possible parents John Templeton & Janet Anderson together in 1851 - but they could be outside the area for some reason. You'd have expected John & Janet to have children after 1855 too, but maybe one of them has died and the surviving spouse has re-married.
Or that wee Janet is actually now an orphan because both parents have died. There could be many other explanations.
