Suggestion for the way forward please.....

Post by jean o » Mon Sep 11, 2006 11:06 pm

I have been trying to trace my ggggrandfather James Ferguson (Farquharson). Despite having his marriage cert and his childrens birth and death certs I am no further forward. I can find no trace of him on 1841> census.
The only details I have is when he married his cert states Bilbester (1816 - to Catherine Horne) and his childrens death certs state he was a carting contractor.
There are, of course, a lot of James Fergusons on scotlands people and family search but none born approx 1795 Caithness.
I have tried, with your help, to go sideways but no success.

So should I join a fhs and would they be able to go any further considering the limited details I have?
How do I know which James is mine when I have no idea of where he originated if not Caithness?

I am now getting desperate for suggestions as I hate to think this is the end of the trail.

Thank you
Jean

ps - I have posted this on caithness message board

Hi Jean:

Have you also tried to locate him using the alternate spelling of 'Farquarson' or 'Farquerson'?

Just an off-chance,

Hi Jean,

Where and when did James die? Also was Catherine still alive at the time of his death?

Cheers

Hi Jean

Just to confuse you even more - I found a Farquhar spelt FARGUHAR - so it should all be considered !

In this instance I'd strongly advise the use of wildcards.

Here, for instance, one approach that I'd consider would be searching on FAR*R*. (Maybe even F?R*R* ........)

If that produced too many hits then I'd play about with FARQ*R* and other variants ..........

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I have searched under Farquharson and used some wild cards.
I cannot find James or Catherine after the birth of their children.
In 1841 the children are still in Thurso and Wick
There are, of course, James and Catherines on scotlands people - all of which I have looked at (and spent a fortune!) but none that really fit in with what I know. Those that seemed likely I followed up but without success.
I will try again using different variants - but how will I know which James is mine if I have no other info??? - just hope he is still with Catherine as I know she was born 1795 Thurso Caithness, parents John and Catherine Sutherland?

SUGGESTION FOR WAY FORWARD

It is probably not relevant in your case, but I accidently found some of mine on an Immigrant Ships Transcriber Guild list. They had been cleared out of Sutherland in 1848.

Hi Wini

Thanks for your suggestion, alas my James and Catherine were not on the list, however, I have added it to my favourites because its a great site!
