Margaret Lumsden/Lumsdaine/Lumsdane - who's her mother?.....

Have the marriage of Margaret Lumsdane to James Farmer in 1822 - High Church, Edinburgh. Father is William, a cooper of Edinburgh.

There is a choice of 3 birth dates for Margaret as 3 different couples with father William Lumsden/Lumsdaine/Lumsdane had a daughter Margaret between 1798-1800 either at the Parish Church or St Cuthberts.

Margaret McKENZIE
Helen BATHGATE or
Margaret CAMERON

As Margaret's marriage lines didn't say who her mother was I hoped the death certificates might but it didn't.

James and Margaret didn't register their children's births but have found 4 from marriage and death certificates, Hugh (James's father), Helen (James's mother/Margaret's mother?), Thomas? and Margaret (Margaret's mother?).

Have found other possible marriages for the other Margaret Lumsden's - 1 to Thomas TROTTER in 1820 and 2 to Nathaniel PARSONS in 1830 but cannot find anything else for them.

Where can I go from here to try and establish the correct mother for Margaret?

Any help most appreciated.

Am stuck for the moment with my own searches, so thought I'd have a wee look at some others who hadn't had a reply to their posts. I've been very lucky to have had help with my queries.

Have you had any luck with your searches? I looked for the people you mentioned via the LDS site and saw the three Margarets that you mentioned. Did you look for other marriages for the name Lumsden, et al? If I've repeated something you already have/know I apologise.

I noticed these marriages in batch no M119834 1811-1821 - could some be siblings of your Margaret?

I found some of my own "missing" Lindsays by looking for siblings and tracking them - they had some unusual forenames so it was a bit easier.

Anyway best of luck with your search - it would be interesting to know if you found Margaret's mother and if you did, how you managed it!

However just to confuse even more now the 1841 and 1851 censuses are out - I have Margaret Farmer nee Lumsdane on the

1841 census age 35
1851 census age 46
1861 census - can't read census page if I found the right one.
1871 census age 59
1881 census - not found

death 1885 age 77 - I think this is her but she was at craiglochie and no family member registered her death or put down a maiden name for her.

I know census ages are notoriously inaccurate but this would put her birth c1806 but there doesn't appear to be any births around this time with a father William., just a Hugh, Alexander, John or Robert.

Also she married in 1822 (confirmed) so would have been around 16 years of age when she married.

Wonder if the age is wrong because it was rounded down originally for the 1841 Census and that was carried on. I'm not certain, but I think this was the Census where ages were "rounded" to nearest 5 years - if I'm wrong hopefully someone will correct me.
