I've posted a picture to the gallery for some opinions.
I know that this is my grandmother and I believe it is her second husband.
My grandfather died in 1922.
In 1929 at age 49, Grandma married her second husband (age 36).
The picture is very poor quality. I initially took the white area on the lower half of the man's face and going onto his shirt front as a beard, but on closer examination, it is a flaw in the photo itself.
Any help in determining the date from the photo, would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Frances
A wild guess, based on the length of her dress & the cross-over style coat & the syle of hat (which looks very 20s) says to me maybe 1920-30s? I'd lean towards the 30s. A bit of research into costume or the era might narrow it down a bit, bearing in mind that older women often wore clothes which were not at the cutting edge of fashion. If you know her date of birth you could also try a rough working out form the approximate age she appears to be in the photo (which may just throw my estimate out the window!!
)
Best wishes
Lesley

That cloche hat is quite distinctive of the 20's, isn't it.
However, as Lesley said, older women then weren't that up to the minute on fashion, so the piccy could have been taken in the 30's.

I think the hat looks rather 20's, but as you suggest, she may not have been 'up to the minute'.
She was born in 1878, married in 1897, widowed in 1922. My Grandfather was a 'soft goods dealer', then a 'road surfaceman' and after his death, my Grandmother was a greengrocer, so economics may also have influenced her wardrobe.
I'm thinking the man's clothes might actually be the better clue, and serve to rule out what would not have been likely prior to my grandfather's death in 1922.
Before 1922, would a man have had a floppy pocket square, a 4 button waistcoat, very slim leg pants with no cuff, a wide wing on the lower lapel of the jacket, a hat with a high curved crown and a flat brim with a slight slouch?
Syles and fashions this side of the Atlantic would have been significantly behind Britain and Europe and the books heavily impacted by American films. So I don't think they would give me the right time frame.
Does anyone see a 13 year age difference in these two?
Thanks,
Frances

I think it would be probably in the late 1920's around the latter half. You are probably asking me why I go for this date range. Well we have a photo of my grannie and mother in our collection, and grannies clothes/hat are almost identical, my mother was born in 1922 and she was 3-4 in the picture with grannie looking daggers at her
