Hi Gloria,

If both his marriages are after 1861 then you should get them on scotlands people. in turn if you get the marriage it should give you his parents names. you have to buy credits but it is reasonably priced. there is a link to the site at the top of this page.

Hi Gloria,

I dod a quick search on scotlands people and there was 1 result for robert mckerrow marrying sarah kirk and there was 1 result for robert mckerrow marrying jeannie glover. i dont have any credits to look at them but iwould think that these are the correct people.

ok thank you. So it should be easy to find then if there is only one entry for the marriage.
THanks for looking for me. Just have to wait until I get some credits. Shall need to make a list of things to look for again.

Hi gloria,

i entered both sets of names and i didnt put in a specific date or place and each set only had 1 result so i would think that it would have to be the right pair. However when i was searching for the marriage of robert to jeannie glover i left the jeannie out as that probably wasnt her real name. possibly on the MC it will be jean, jane or janet. anyway leave the first name part blank and there is still only 1 result.

You could also try the 1861 and 1871 census which you also get on scotlands people, you might find robert on there with his parents.

good luck :D

And the birth register entry for Robert is easy to find, altho' the county involved isn't the one that includes Stranraer !!, - it's further to the East, and it looks like his parents came down there from the South of Ayrshire, given the places of death of 3 of his grandparents.

It's then straightforward to find the death register entries for his parents, James McKERROW and Susan McKERROW MS ADAMS (use the cross search facility using both surnames for her record) so that these will take you back another generation.

Beyond that you'll be able to extend the tree via the death register entries of both of Robert's grandmothers, one with the South-West given name of Nicholas, and one of his grandfathers, although, sadly, the informant didn't have all the info on the parents of the deceased.

And who knows where the OPRs may take you beyond that ?!
