Name appears on Census but not on Birth index.....

I need a bit of help/advice here, please.

My g/f, Anthony FERGUSON, was born 13.06.1902, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. I have not been able to trace his birth index, so because of Scottish links I looked on ScotlandsPeople.

There was only 1 Anthony FERGUSON born in 1902 but that was 17.02.1902 and I am not convinced this is the right person.

Out of curiosity I decided to check the Scottish census for Anthony FERGUSON’s father (another Anthony FERGUSON). I found him but also found that there was an entry for a further Anthony FERGUSON born around 1900, but this person did not appear in my original index search ! Therefore I can’t view his birth record to see if this may be the right Anthony FERGUSON.

Any clues/ideas ?

I can only think that there is several different spellings involved with all your names.

Hi there and welcome to TalkingScot!

I had a quick look at the Scottish records and can tell you the second Anthony you've found was born 23 Nov 1899 in Kilmarnock but fathers name is John so very doubtful he's yours. I searched a range from 1895 through 1905 for any Anthony Ferg*son born anywhere in Scotland and there were only the two in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. It's not looking like the right ones unless the date of birth got changed at some point (which can happen believe me!!) Do you know the occupation of his father? Do you know of any other siblings to Anthony? I think a little more data is needed to conclusively prove or disprove the one born 17 Feb 1902 as a possibility.

ps...even went back and tried expanding a search using Ant* F*son to pick up any other possible spelling variations and still there are only 2 results in that time period in all of Scotland.

I don't have information on his parents at all. After he was killed in WW2 my g/m didn't really speak about him. On his army paybook I can just about make out that he had a sister called Sarah (it was written in pencil and has faded!). This was written in 1939 so there may be good chance that she was born later than 1905.

It doesn't help for this search, unfortunately, as Jean has shown by searching for Ant* F*son, but I thought I would mention that I have found one and the same person listed as Ferguson in English records and Farquharson in Scottish ones. That tidbit might come in handy one day.

Hi Andrew,

There was an Anthony Fergusson born in Sunderland during the April May June quarter of 1903(ref 10a 743). Could that be him?
