Dennison.....

Post by Pam Chetland » Fri Sep 29, 2006 1:43 pm

I am looking for any information on Joseph Dennison, I cannot find when or where he was born, on the 1841 census he said he was born in the county ( Midlothian ) but on the 1851 census he said he was not born in the county. He died in 1854 aged 38 yrs in Newton Midlothian so he was born around 1816,he was a coalminer.

Hi Pam,

Welcome to TS.

I didn't find a birth but there is an IGI entry for a Joseph Denniston who married a Christian Cook in Newton, Midlothian on 12th April 1833. Could he be yours? It's an extracted entry from the local records.

If so, I'm assuming that this is the info you have for 1841, I've found this by piecing it together on Freecen, it's the nearest I can get to a Joseph Dennison who's a coal miner:-

Address: Dalkeith

Denson, Christian, wife, 30,
Denson, Joseph, Head, 25, coal miner
Denson, Christian, daughter, 6
Denson, Amelia, daughter, 4,
Denson, John, son, 11m,

There are also these births listed to this couple on the IGI:-

ELIZABETH DENNISON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 09 FEB 1845 Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland

MARY DENNISON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 05 JUN 1836 Newton, Midlothian, Scotland

WILLIAM DENNISON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 20 MAY 1849 Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland

I appreciate that none of this gives you more info on Joseph but sometimes going sideways can help you going backwards.

Have you actually got a copy of the 1851 census from SP? It's just that with the majority of the 1851s that I have, it gives a place of birth.....unless it's the dreaded Ireland!

Good luck
Donna

Hi there

Building on what Donna has found there are some very interesting further records to note. Can't be proven but in this case I suspect there may be a connection. Joseph and Christina had a son in 1851 named Andrew from the IGI. Now In 1855 there is a marriage of an Andrew Dennsion in Dalkeith. Is it possible he is a baby brother to Joseph????? This Andrew states his parents names as William Dennison and Emily Barnar? (which equates to Amelia and also Euphemia on the BIVRI disks and IGI) Both parents are deceased in 1855 and interestingly it looks like Andrew has stated his birth was registered in the Episcopal Church. This fact could account for the records being hard to locate. So based on names of Amelia as Joseph's daughter and the fact that Joseph named a son Andrew it looks plausible that Joseph and Andrew were brothers or at least related.

Anyhow....these births from the IGI parent search to Joseph and searching on "Christina" so we've picked up a few more for you.

1. Joseph Dennison - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 26 APR 1843 Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland

2. MARY DENNISON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 01 AUG 1847 Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland

3. JOHN DENNISON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 13 SEP 1840 Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland

4. ANDREW DENNISON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 08 JUN 1851 Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland

Best wishes
Jean

Joseph Dennison

Hi Donna and Jean Thank you both for the welcome and having taken the time to search for me, I have access to both 1841 and 1851 censuses and on the 1851 census both Joseph and Christina claim to have been born in Dalkeith Midlothian although on the 1841 census they said they were not. I have all the information about Joseph's marriage and children and I also suspect that William Dennison (born Ireland) and Emily Bardner may have been his parents but think that Emily may have been his stepmother because there is a birth of a Hannah Denniston 4 Apr 1813 in Temple Midlothian to a William Denniston and Mary McLaughlan and William married Emily Bardner 25 Oct 1819 in Carrington which is not very far away from Temple Of course all of this is supposition and I keep posting messages in the hope that someone has information that would confirm it
I had not actually got Andrew Dennison and Marion Nisbet's marriage cert although I have now and that is an interesting point about his birth being registered in the Episcopal Church, can you tell me what difference it makes and how you would go about finding out more
Best Wishes Pam
