Post by kazzie20 » Wed Oct 04, 2006 3:42 pm

WHITE
Looking for any imformation on the following:

Jane White born abt 1885 in Cannongate Edinburgh
She had an illigitimate son Frederick George White born 1902 in Cannongate Edinburgh.
Frederick married Catherine Monoghan in St Giles in 1919 he was aged 17.
Can anyone help by telling me how i go about identifying the parents of Jane White?

Thanx

Hi Kazzie

Sometimes to find out about Births you have to start by locating her Death entry. If you have a rough idea of when she died you should be able to find the record on scotlandspeople.gov.uk (click on the blue tab at the top of the page here.) This would usually give you the names of her parents. The only problem would be if she married subsequent to the illigitimate birth, that would make locating her more difficult.
There is no entry for her on IGI because their records generally only go up to 1875 so no cheap help there.
White could be spelt Whyte so search using a wildcard Wh*te to cover both ways of spelling. Unfortunately there are 3 possibles on SP between 1884 and 1886 in Canongate. So unless you can narrow down the date you might have to check out all three unless you have other information such as a middle name which might, or might not be recorded.
This is where a death entry can be so useful.

Hope you are successful with your search.

Hi Kazzie,
what was the occupation of the mother on the birth cert?
You may find her on 1901 census.

Hi kazzie

Did you look closely at the BC for Frederick? The digital image is not the best sample and the handwriting is not the best but it looks to me like there may be an occupation under her name. It also gives the address of where the birth took place. If you follow the thinking of Cathy and search the 1901 census for Jane (be sure to use wildcards like Russell instructed!) then there are only 3 possibles.....

Use these search parameters..

You searched for: Surname: "WH*TE"; Use Soundex: Off; Forename: "JANE*"; Sex: "Female"; Age From: 15; Age To: 25; Year: 1901; District: "CANONBIE|CANONGATE";

and then view the first result in the list. You'll find the address aligns and I believe the occupation does too. At any rate the address does and that is enough for me

Best wishes
Jean
